Pound 4 pound status is one of the things that's hurting Boxing imo. You got diva's like Mayweather, who once he'd earned his stripes, wanted to kick back and fight whoever he wanted, and apparently, you can fight anyone!, but as long as you stay undefeated, you keep your P4P status, and can get away with it.

Mayweather is carrying the batton past on by Roy Jones jr imo. If you can claim to be the best, your apparently in control of who can test that theory.

Look at this BS with Bob Arum, using Manny's status as leverage.

P4P status creates a lot of interest, and people would rather be able to categorize one person as THE best, and buy into it, but it comes at a price imo.

Mayweather Jr ducked Margarito many times.

Pacquiao ducked Humberto Soto many times, among other fighters too.

Pac is the one thats hurting boxing with his overrated status, steroids uses, cheatings, fixed fights, and ducking/avoiding many other fighters.

Agreed to some degree. Once a fighter gets up there, it seems the only way to go down is to lose. Level of opposition doesn't seem to be as relevant once you get there. Such as Hopkins the past 2 or 3 years until Pascal.

P4P status wouldn't be what it is today if they never expanded the divisions. Expanding the divisions took away the amount of good and relevant fights we have by half. Diluted the talent too much.

Floyd was P4P for years, all while avoiding the greater threats and talking ****. While every other fighter was bashing seven bells out of each other and doing things the right way, only to 'just' break the top 10.

It's obvious that when people talk P4P they don't consider opposition or activity combined. Just who 'looks' the best and 'could' be the best.

I agree the P4P ranking are hurting boxing, I think it fosters all this ducking and jiving thats so prevalent in boxing today. Dude get that P4P ranking and all of sudden he don't feel he has to prove himself.

The OP makes a good point. In a world where an average boxer can pick up an alphabet title, it's seen as 'better' to be p4p so crazy match-ups are made. I'm a fan of Pac but I've no doubt his match-ups at this point in his career are very carefully made in order to enhance his p4p status (his perfomances still surprise the **** out of me though).

As for the steroid bull****, I hold the belief that ignoring crackheads is usually a good policy, or I'd believe the sky is pink and my flat screen is only worth twenty quid. Pac found his natural weight, no great mystery there.

hmm im trying to get drunk, im usually very creative when drunk or high, so lets continue with this.
So the problem stated in the op is caused by there being no value in belts and ranks anymore.
There are to many divisions and to many sanctioning bodies that take the value out of it.
Whoever made the decision to get more weightclasses whenever it was decided?
