Professional Boxing has reached the point where it has well over 100 years of history and countless numbers of all time greats.

A popular topic in many boxing circles, is who was the p4p greatest of all time. Frankly, I have a hard enough time awarding the greatest title to any member of a particular division, much less on a pound for pound basis.

With so many great fighters and unique accomplishments to choose from, plus the conditions by which the game has changed over generations, can we fairly give any one man recognition as being the pound for pound best of all time?

My answer is no. How about yours?

I agree with you. Up until this year I had Robinson like many others. Now I don't have a clue. It's more about who can be brackated as deserving of the #1 spot as oppossed to who is the nailed down #1.

I dont think there is a nailed down no1 p4p,it depends on what style of fighter you like and how we feel their styles would go head to head with others in history, always an inexact science.....
Its hard to be objective as well,i think whitaker is a great great fighter, and his resume is great but to me he is boring and i definately wouldnt have him number one or even top ten, though his skills/talent may suggest otherwise....Even though chavez was soundly beaten by whitaker it left a hollow feeling boxing entertainment wise, and i always preferred chavez......? Go figure.....
Also, the bigger the diffference in weight the harder to compare,i mean how would ali do at lightweight or JCC at heavy? Very hard to determine sometimes, especially if a said fighter sticks to one or only a few close weight divisions....

Agreed, and in fact I'm even going to emphasize my point by trying to narrow this down even further.

Let's say that we tried to determine who the best fighter was of just the last 30 years. This would still be a near impossible task when looking at the great fighters of that time frame such as: Leonard, Duran, Chavez, Whitaker, Delahoya, Jones, Mayweather Jr., etc. There are way too many fighters in even just the last few decades let alone 100+ years to make a fair decision.

I agree with the premise of this thread. To me all pound for pound means is "In reality, the Heavyweight Champion would kick his ass".

The number one is Henry Armstrong. It's not even up for debate.

He was my #1 last week. But for a year before that it was Robinson. And when I was a kid it was Frank Bruno.

It can be deterimined... Bob Fitzsimmons

Of course your own answer could imply that it is indeed possible to determine based upon question wording in the title.
