As some of you will know, Ring, KO, BI started their regular pound-for-pound rating in the mid-80s, but Boxing Illustrated compiled their Top 10 in an 1977 issue, but didn't continue the trend at the time. It's a good, contemporary look at how these fighters were actually rated back in the day, rather than years later after they went on to achieve better things (or didn't quite reach ther heights expected of them). I think JT will like this one... ;)

    1. Carlos Zarate
    2. Carlos Monzon
    3. Roberto Duran
    4. Alexis Arguello
    5. Miguel Canto
    6. John Conteh
    7. Wilfred Benitez
    8. Carlos Palomino
    9. Victor Galindez
    10. Esteban De Jesus

Really surprised to see Zarate at #1, and Monzon still holding on to the #2 spot. Otherwise, its what you would expect. That top 5 is insane. Nice find.

It does state than Monzon may be at #1 if he was more active. But it's good to see just how highly Zarate was rated back then, as he doesn't get enough credit these days- he'd just smashed Zamora in the battle of the Z-men when the list was done.

It's funny how the 70's were the high water mark for Heavyweights yet not a single one could crack the p4p top 10 back in 77.

Also it's interesting to note how highly Zarate's unification win over Zamora was thought of at the time. I mean Zarate's record and KO% was sensational but it featured a lot of no names as well. It seems the Zamora win added huge legitimacy to his position in the boxing world.

That said it's a fantastic group of fighters.

I think had the list been, say, mid-74, both Foreman and Ali would probably have been on it. I think it speaks volumes about how much the fight trade felt Ali had left in the tank and how they rated his previous year as champ.

Good to see Esteban rated so highly too. Although the article mentions that the recent death of Tyrone Everett meant 10th place was up for grabs.

It is. A very strong era.

By 77, the golden era was gone, as far as I'm concerned, even though the superstar of the era was still reigning, albeit on shaky enough ground.

I looked up the Zamora fight on youtube. Somebody in the comments section states that his first 25 opponents haddnt won any fights between them.

Ive just looked it up and his first 25 opponents had only 2 wins between them

Well thats 25 co-incidences in a row then. All co-incidentally as bad a record as you can possibly have.

I think his dominating victories against Rodolfo Martinez and Paul Ferreri had a bit to do with it as well.

Good to see the sport has come on in leaps and bounds since those lean times.

Zarate's record does take a bit of a beating nowadays. On here especially.

Thing was he was beating excellent men like Zamora, Davila and Martinez decisively without need or clamour for rematches.

No struggling and things being drawn out into trilogies etc which someone looking back at his career through a barrera\Morales filter seems to find hard to then accept these guys were really good.

same thing has happened to Jofre unfortunately.
