Roy Jones is the most naturally gifted boxer who ever lived and, in his prime, the closest thing to an unbeatable fighter I've ever seen.
Agreed! He will never be p4p greatest of all time (nowhere near infact), because his record doesnt live up to the true ATG's! (re: Names & the fact he was KTFO twice by b level fighters) However, H2H in his prime, it was difficult to land a punch on him..never mind a combonation, he destroyed boxers rhythem! his footwork was his defence and with speed, timing and reactions, its almost unreal to believe that ANY fighter in history wouldn't have 'trouble' with Roy.... The thing I always say is that if he did always have a glass gaw (which i dont believe) it becomes a non-factor....As most fighters couldn't touch him, because that footwork was something else.
People should not put so much into Jones chin issues b/c Jones was never visibly hurt in his entire career until he lost those 25 lbs of muscle. So to assume he wouldnt match up well in his prime is a bit ridiculous. In Roy's prime, I'm not sure anyone truly catches him to test his chin.
It has already been explained on here so I will not waste my time but Roy never lost 25 pounds of muscle. That is an excuse/myth that I don't feel like getting into right now.
You could make a case that Spinks and Foster and Moore and perhaps others should be favoured over Roy. But no 175-and-under fighter who ever boxed would be a CLEAR favourite. In other words, it's quite possible Roy could have beaten any of them. And there aren't more than five or six where I wouldn't make Roy the clear favourite.
I would agree Jones is the most ATHLETICALLY gifted fighter of all time, but no way is he the best fighter of all time. He did not prove himself consistently against the best same as Mayweather. That is always the problem i have when people make these claims about Jones or Mayweather. Jones was a rythm fighter like Leonard and any fighter can be timed no matter how fast they are. Jones just did not face the best competition consistently enough for that to be tested be exposed.
It's hard to starch someone if you can't hit them. In his prime, Roy did not need a good chin because he was too fast.
Jones weighed 193 lbs for this bout. At LHW he usually weighed around 174 and rehydrated not more than 15 pounds. So ex. his weight on fight night at LHW was around 183-185 pounds. He hardly gained 25 pounds of pure muscle :roll::roll: However I agree that he wasn't the same fighter coming back from HW.
Antonio Tarver would starch him, I think. Oh wait...he did! "Ya got any excuses tonight, Roy?" ****** slap to the canvas* jkdking - Your dreams will be haunted by that line for the rest of your goddamned useless life, as will Roy's. ****ING PWNED! :hi:
I can't think of anyone at 168 and 175 that I would pick to beat him. There are those at 160 and 200 that I think could but he would be hell for all of them.
Glass Joe.....long as he doesnt get tapped on the Chin! Michael Moorer when he was at 175 would have administered the classic beatdown. There is no substance to Roy there never was it was all flash and a glass jaw.
This thread - and most threads like it - is absolutely mad. Some guys saying he's "the closest thing to unbeatable there's ever been" other guys saying he was "all style no substance". I'm paraphrasing, but you get it. The truth is somewhere in between. NO fighter is so much better than EVERY SINGLE PEER IN HISTORY that he beats them all, or anything like it. Similairly, no fighter who LOOKS as good as Jones looked is anything other than very special. You guys who are picking him to beat everybody going "head to head and pound for pound", or from 160-175 - what is it you know that I don't? Or do you maybe just not understand that these things are decided in the detials, not in the highlights reels? And you guys who are calling him "glass-jawed", have you forgotten the incredible things he achieved in his career or just not paying enough attention to the highlights reels? The guy is a monster, and head to head he is very dangerous. I pick a LOT of fighters to beat him based upon technical short-comings and a vulnerable chin. I'm quite happy that i've got that right, or close to it.
