not really PBF proved how smart it was when he beat DLH but pacman is not the same weight as DLH...if pac beats him i will give him the p4p title...it just means who is the best boxer out there
It probably is stupid. But if all stupid boxing talking points (P4P, mythical matchups etc) were abolished boxing fans would have little to talk about. It keeps things interesting so lets keep doing it.
Excellent proposal! :happy Yep, P4P lists have become a popularity contest more than anything else. It's always great to state your list of the best fighters in the game, but the "he's #1 cause of his resume - no he's not, he's lacking in skills - no..." kind of argument is pointless really. After all, we don't have Sugar Ray Robinsons in our era.
I think if their was a universal way of rating a fighter P4P then there would be less arguements thus giving the P4P title more respect.. Obviously some people will rate certain boxers higher because they like them. This is a problem because if you are making any judgements like this you should remain objective. However, i believe the main reason people have varrying lists and therefore more arguments occuring is because there are two main things to take into consideration when rating fighters pound for pound and different people put more significance (ranging from slightly favouring it to it being the only factor that matters) on each one; skill and resume. The original meaning of P4P, given to SRR, was that if all fighters were the same size and weight then SRR would be the top man. Although SRR had a great resume this title i believe was given to him because of his superior skill. However, over the years resume has come into the equation more when evaluating P4P status and this is were the waters have become murky and its harder to judge whos P4P as people give different amounts of credit to these two factors. I think it might be better to have a P4P list along the lines of the original meaning were if all fighters were the same size then who would win(Calderon would probably be number 1 on my list) and a most succesful list were resume is the over riding factor.
But is there really a "real" definition? I mean the term was thought of to describe Sugar Ray Robinson. As the years passed people started giving the term a different meaning, and nowdays almost everybody has a different opinion about the top p4p spots.
The problem with it today is its not about who is the best fighter, its about who is the hottest fighter...In the true sence of p4p Pacman isnt even top five. His skills are pretty limited, and he can only fight one way...True p4p top level guys have in the past made very good and even some great fighters appear to be average...thing is you dont always have a guy that is p4p king, sometimes there just isnt a dominate fighter and this is one of those times...you could make a legit argument about 3 or 4 guys being p4p right now...My pick is for Calzaghe because he has picked up his level of comp over the past 5 or 6 fights and he has 1)won all his fights 2)he REALLY won all his fights. Outside of the Reid fight some years back and the hopkins fight Joe has clearly won his fights, that is more then you can say for Pac in both cases. Pac has 1) actually lost 2) he should have lost more then he has.
p4p means the best fighter in the world period...If this guys was the same size as every other fighter in the world and fought them he would win, or would have the best chance of winning...Which leads me to the problem that I have with Pac...Its clear to me that JMM is a better fighter then Pac, but he isnt as popular or hot...For me Pac is alot like Shane Mosley when he was being called p4p king, he wasnt the best fighter he was the most popular fighter.
Pac skill wise isn't the best in the world but whether people like it or not he did beat an extremely skilled guy who the term P4P was made for in JMM.
Thats quite natural.... Pound 4 pound is who you think the best fighters are regardless of size, you want to abolish that? Its a natural part of boxing speculating.... and will never go away, trust me.
