1 Fedor Emelianenko 2 Georges St Pierre 3 Anderson Silva 4 Miguel Torres 5 Bj Penn 6 Lyoto Machida 7 Rashad Evans 8 Quinton Jackson 9 Dan Henderson 10 Thiago Alves
Sorry, but there's no ****ing way Anderson belongs above GSP right now, and this is coming from a guy who was recently stating that Anderson belongs above Fedor (prior to certain more recent events). Anderson is the clear cut #3 in the world right now, with GSP and Fedor #1A and #1B. Personally, I think what GSP has done has been more impressive than anything Fedor's done in his career, even though Fedor is clearly just as good an overall fighter.
Fedor is number one, there is nothing GSP can do, apart from beating A.Silva who would change that. Fedor never lost, never. But if GSP beat Alves next fight, like I think he will do quite easily, GSP will become the #2 P4P clearly over Anderson Silva. A win vs Alves, is much better than a win vs Leites. Fitch, Penn and Alves vs Irvin, Cote and Leites, its not even debatable. So a win for GSP vs Alves, and he will surpass Anderson.
GSP has been more dominant and conclusive in his victories and over better opposition than even Fedor. And he doesn't even need to beat Alves to be ranked clearly ahead of Anderson, though that will of course cement it and probably give him the edge over Fedor unless Fedor beats Barnett in similarly impressive fashion, in which case they'll still be ranked right alongside each other. The fact that Fedor is undefeated is what makes the two of them #1A and #1B, otherwise I'd honestly give the edge to GSP based on what he's been doing recently. Both are pretty much invincible right now, but Fedor has never faltered, while GSP had to pick himself back up from the flukey Serra loss before going on a dominant streak unlike anything he'd done even prior. That loss made him a much better fighter though, which is the best thing that can be done and asked for, and thus I don't think it should be held against him these days, especially as he avenged it in dominating fashion. Again, GSP for recent work and domination should rank ahead of Fedor, but Fedor's never faltering aura of invincibility ranks him right alongside GSP, as GSP has at least slipped up once, though he's been more dominant than anyone could imagine since.
Look, before the BJ Penn 2 fight, GSP was clearly number 3. His victory of last night was the best of his life, his best performance. But he did it vs someone who BELONG at 155. Yes, Penn is a top 5 WW and he is an amazing fighter, but his best weight isnt 170. So GSP, beating a smaller guy(although incredible), don't leap him over Fedor, who just trashed 2 former UFC champs under 4 minutes the two of them. Just no. For me GSP is second right nowbut A.Silva can argue too, even if his competition isnt the same of GSP. Beating Alves will just make it very clear. But if GSP beat Alves and beat Anderson Silva. Yes he is a legit number 1. Until then, Fedor, is the best fighter alive, its not for nothing that 80 percent of fighter call him the number one. He NEVER lost. GSP's loss vs Serra was the best thing it could happen to GSP, but it is too recent, even if he trashed him in a rematch. But if he manage to beat Anderson Silva, at 185, then yes he is king of P4P because he would have beat a MUCH bigger, opponent who is as skilled as him.
if gsp defeats alves in spectacular fashion and the fight the fans want to see is gsp v silva at 185 do you think gsp will move up to face a beating, or stay safe at 170
I just read in mmabay that fight is a possibility in Dec should both guys win their next fight...hope it's true.
Thank you Quebec, nicely said. Fedor 1 GSP 2 A. Sliva 3. Fedor looks like the terminator, GSP looks extremely good in everything he does, wrestling, stand-up, GNP, and subs. A. Sliva always looks good but I don't think his comp is up to par with the other two, although I give him props for the Hendo fight I think Marquardt and Cote both deserve rematches. Nate won't get too we'll see if Cote does.
Fedor is No. 1. He's undefeated for all intents and purposes. When he was knocked silly by his version of Matt Serra (ie Fujita) he found a way to win. GSP didn't. Silva is No. 2 based solely on the fact he's undefeated in the UFC and has been on a better streak than GSP. I think he's going to lose this slot in short order though because GSP is making a strong statement. GSP is No. 3. If he destroys Alves, I will instantly move him to No. 2. If it wasn't for that first Serra fight, he would already be No. 2. He's overall a much better fighter than A. Silva.
GSP should get a pass at number 2. On paper he has the best resume(Fedor arguably) But keep in mind that when you are on a level of Anderson Silva, when everything comes to you in slow motion and when you are so good that you can pretty much visualize the end of a fight. Then it is hard to judge a fighter of Andersons caliber. Andersons resume will never be good enough just because of the fact that there is no one on his level.. If a great fighter like Franklin (who if he didnt face Silva would probably be in the p4p discussion) looked like a punching bag, then it becomes impossible to gauge him. One thing is clear, based solely on observations of refined skills, tactics, sophistication and elevation of the game into an art. Anderson and Machida are untouchable right now.
