These guys all went undefeated that year, I think. I thought about including Alexis Arguello and Jeff Chandler but alas, Arguello lost to Aaron Pryor and Chandler.....well, between Chandler and Serrano, the Puerto Rican in me had to feel I needed to put Serrano in lol so that tipped it over in favor of Sammy as far as his inclusion versus Jeff's.

It seems that knocking out Bruce Finch has left an indelible mark on someone.

Bobby Chacon should be on that list for 1982.

Thomas Hearns. I think he was so damn close being the greatest fighter ever. I'm not sure he makes to 10 all time, but I LOVE Hearns.

I think Aaron Pryor was also one of those guys that was super close to top 5 all time great, but needed a FEW little things.

Hearns, Holmes and Pryor gave the best ring performances in 1982, Holmes looked insane destroying Spinks, Pryor looked just as good beating far better opposition and Hearns v Benitez is one of the finest displays of ring science ever seen.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi should be on the list.

I would say the top 6 boxers were....

    Larry Holmes
    Marvin Hagler
    Dwight Muhammad Qawi
    Aaron Pryor
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Thomas Hearns

Out of this list they were clearly the best fighters at that time IMO but who rates as number 1 ? i'm not entirely sure i would like some more input from other members to help me decide.

I think Michael Spinks has a good argument aswell, he hadn't beat Qawi yet but was undefeated with wins over Yaqui Lopez, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Marvin Johnson.

PS did i misunderstand the thread ? are we taking into account the whole resume up until 1982 ? or just what they achieved in 1982 primarily ?

I wanted to include Tommy too but the fact he only had one title fight-late in the year too-made me leave him out., Maybe it was a mistake by me...

Ray Leonard only had one fight too, against much lesser opposition.

That's a good point. However, Leonard had shared fighter of the year for 1981 with Salvador Sanchez, and he was still active, technically speaking, in 1982. Plus, he had beaten Hearns.
