He beat a featherweight who topped out at lightweight fighting at 140 with the help of a special bottle mixed by a man who spent prison time for an illegal assault in the ring.

But other than that, fine win.

Judging by the original poster's second post I would say the thread is strictly about 1982. If that is the case, I believe the man on the list who had the best year was Wilfredo "Bazooka" Gomez. He went 6-0 including 4-0 with four knockouts in title bouts. Among his title fight victims were Juan Meza and Lupe Pintor.

As much as I love Ray Leonard I’m not so sure why so many people picked him. The only guy he beat in 1982 was Bruce Finch. Gomez sounds like the best candidate from what I can see

Agreed but we could also say the same for other smaller fighters like when Marvelous Marvin beat Tommy Hearns, a blown up welterweight or Hearns dusting Duran, really a blown up lightweight. It goes on and on but true a fine win for Pryor.

My thought at the time (before he ever faced Pryor) was that Arguello topped out at 135 and even there was a stretch.

Last I checked, Hearns and Duran won championships at middleweight. Arguello’s best win at 140 was over Kevin freaking Rooney.

Few great fighters become great trainers. Likewise with few great coaches in other sports having been greats as players.

Freddie Roach, Eddie Futch weren’t greats. George Benton was a heckuva fighter and well respected but hardly an ATG.

Rooney wasn’t, in my estimation, a great trainer. He basically knew one style (Cus D’Amato’s) and took a guy with all the tools who had been literally raised on that system. I know he had some success with Vinny Paz, but mostly he didn’t do much apart from Tyson.

I'm treating this as who among that list had the better year in 1982. I think it's between Holmes with his win over Cooney, Pryor with his fantastic year and winning vs. Arguello, or the aforementioned Chacon winning 4 fights then beating Limon in a great great fight.

GREAT post Fogger. And I can't stand Gomez, as great as a fighter as he was.

Perhaps the thread should be called, "Who came out on top in 1982 due to the great year he had?"

Made the same point earlier in the thread — not sure anyone ever bounced back from a defeat much better than Gomez in 1982 coming off the 1981 Sanchez loss.

Activity? Wilfredo Gomez, 3 tune -ups and 2 world class fighters in Meza and the underrated Lupe Pintor.
Best competition Aaron Pryor , against Montilla, Kameda, and of course Agreullo.
Hearns also had all ranked opponents in McCracken, Geraldo, and Benitez.
Bobby Chacon also had a few good fights that year.
    But my winner is ........
Aaron Pryor. Not only did he engage in the greatest fight of that year ( Decade? Ever? )
His other two fights of 1982 were extremely entertaining . The backflip against Kameda , ( I think it was him) the relentless attack against Montilla.
For my book. Aaron Pryor, hands down. In 1982.
