Povetkin is someone Whyte never will be: he is Olympic Champion ( like the same DLH, Ward, Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Patterson and other superstars ). He was World Champion in amateur boxing, european champion and very good amateur kickboxer before this. Povetkin's reputation is this: only one boxer who had won vs prime Povetkin was 37 y.o Wlad. No one else had defeated prime Povetkin. If gentleman opted to fight when he was out of his prime, this does not increase boxers who fought him after 37 y.o Povetkin's versions resumes. He wasn't GOAT but he was and is someone Whyte never and ever will be.
Hope he does indeed call it a day. He and his family can enjoy the fruits of his successful career. Must admit though, I will miss Mr Povetkin. His first fight with Whyte put such a grin on my face...
Yeah. Before he was 37 y.o he was different fighter. Legs are going over the hill, fighter is done. Ofc he still had skills and experience. I had been surprised why he did not had retired when he was 37.
Not my decision to make. However the boxing authorities must ensure that if Povetkin ever gets back into the squared circle that he is 100% fit to fight, as he sure was not fit in this fight, our sport is littered with greats who fought on too long with dreadful consequences. Povetkin can leave our sport financially secure, having left a legacy and other than the issue with PEDs a well respected competitor.
