Povetkin is a small heavyweight and easily could have been a cruiserweight I reckon. If he fought at cruiserweight I think he would have pretty much cleared out that division and beat everyone worth fighting. Imagine a fight between him and Haye at their peaks as well.
He's not that small. He only looks small compared to the giants. He's 6'2 with a fairly solid frame. Sure he could probably get under 200lbs, but it would be uncertain how strong he would be at tat weight. He'd also have some faster fighters in there. Cruiser is a funny division. All the talent at that weight class tend to make a try at heavy since it's the glory division. I think he'd get a belt at some point, I doubt he'd unify due to the difficulty of unifying in general.
Already that Povetkin has bad cardio outside his 2014-2016 period ... If he had to cut ten kilos he would be cooked after three rounds.
I don’t mean literally going down to 200 lbs. like he would come in at 215(only 10 or so lbs less than his weight) and then cut the rest. I really think he could have been an absolute beast in that division.
Seems like the kind of guy that fought at HW because he could not because it was the ideal division for his size these days. Looks to have at least 10-15 lbs of extra fat when coming in at 228lbs or so and that's at middle-age. I'm certain he could have shed that and a little muscle bulk and easily made cruiser with a normal cut. He's only around 6', I'd say. No way he's just three inches shorter than AJ. He'd be faster down there and pretty sure he'd dominate the division for a stretch. Guess he rolled the dice at HW and maybe made more money but won't end up with the legit championship because of the super HWs.
Povetkin ain't dropping down, he's way too big and way too old. If he does Briedis, Dorticos and Makabu will be waiting.
I think Povetkin is actually legit a 6”2 guy not like an Andy Ruiz 6”2. He looks 4 inches smaller than AJ when they stood next to one another and AJ is 6”6.
Would have seen some type of belt , a Gassiev like fighter but would have trouble with Haye and Usyk had he went there in these time frames . Povetkin is more effective at heavyweight but there was always that one guy there as there would have been at C.W that gets the better of him .
I will go against the grain and say he would struggle to make weight, and thus, struggle to get the big wins. We had a thread a few days ago when someone was absurdly saying that we don't know how Chris Byrd would have done at cruiser had he started there. Of course he would have dominated. He still would have been the fastest guy, he would have had real power, and his chin would have been even better. That is because he started at super middle, and he would have been in great shape without struggling. Povetkin is just the opposite. Look at his stocky frame. Look at his shoulders. He is a small heavyweight, period. Chagaev, and especially Ibragimov, would have done better.
The cruiserweight division is a nothing division because all of the money is at HW, and if you want to be the best and earn the most you fight at HW. Why would someone earning millions at HW choose to starve themselves, possibly give up their protein shakes in order to fight for 90% less money? As well as 90% less glory and recognition. Historically the only fighters that drop from HW to CW, are those who have failed at HW and think it will be different at CW. Just ask Chris Byrd how that went for him.
We have to question how well he would make weight. But if he could without too much strain, he would probably have dominated -- cruiser is a weak division.
