According to BoxRec. Can't blame Povetkin for taking a easy stay-active fight now that he's earned a shot at Klitschko's titles before october this year. I have never heard of Estrada. He's only lost to the fringe contender Travis Walker by majority decision and he's had a very active 2008. But with only 3 KO's out of 15 wins on top of an otherwise somewhat mediocre record (compared to world class), he should be an easy win for the Russian. I'd rather he fought an easy fight but a big name at the same time, or a fringe contender. Toney, Rahman, Bidenko, Barret, Beck. Anyway, good to see him active and hopefully he's recovered fully from that knee injury.
I seem to remember Estrada being similar to Chambers, if that is the case then I suppose it would be sensible to say that the fight will go similarly to the fight with Eddie. However, I think Chambers is a bit better but Estrada will have the advantage of seeing how Povetkin was a bit troubled by the style until Chamber's work rate dropped. Povetkin UD12 on work rate.
Estrada's a pretty solid fighter, his handspeed is top notch, though his power is somewhat lacking, he also appears to come in overweight for most of his fights. Him and Chambers are similar, not only in their builds, but also in their attributes and negatives, though I feel Chambers is the better of the two. Povetkin is just delaying the inevitable, which is devastating loss to Wlad, which seems to just around the bend for him, unless Haye gets the upset in June, it seems to me thats what Povetkins hopping for, the way he seems to keep ducking Wlad over this past year.
"Big 6" Estrada poses little threat to Povetkin. Decent boxing skills, but no power. He stands a chance at lasting the full 10 rounds, but Povetkin, at the very least will outwork him on way to a wide UD.
This looks like the perfect stay busy fight- Povetkin will be able to shake off any rust he's got, and Estrada doesn't hit hard enough to make him pay if it takes him awhile to do so. Estrada also has enough skillwise and handspeed wise to make Povetkin work for it, and AP could stand to work on how he deals with handspeed. The worst thing would be for Alex to take a stay busy fight like the Sykes fight where it was so one sided, no progress could really be made. It's safe to say Estrada's got plenty more in him than that. Estrada has potential from a skill standpoint, but doesn't hit hard enough or take his conditioning seriously enough to really make his mark on the division.
Povetkin has ballz the size of cantelopes. This guy has fought more quality contenders than any HW in recent memory.
I concur. He has made me a fan. I wish he would go after Valuev's belt first though. He's not ready for either Klitschko just yet.
estrada is no "contender." he's got some skill and handspeed, can't crack an egg, and should probably lose weight and compete at cruiser. but having said that povetkin could have chosen a few worse hws to fight.
Yeah Povetkin has lots of guts, but I think it would be better if he fought a tall opponent more similar to Klitschko...
I think Estrada's the perfect matchup because Povetkin needs to show he can deal with handspeed better; Chambers hit him often early, but didn't hit hard enough to really make him pay. Wlad does. If Estrada lands on him consistently, it'll be a terrible sign for his chances of smothering Wlad without taking too much punishment.
