Povetkin has terrible skills. His life may be in jeopardy against Klitschko.

    Skills dont beat Wlad.

Its will, chin, power, and toughness that will beat Wlad.... not skills.

That being said, i havnt seen enough of Povetkin to know if he brings any of those in abundance enough to trouble wlad. He looks to me to be a solid contender but one in which doesnt have anything special enough to trouble wlad.

Wlad vs Haye is the fight that should have been made :-( Hopefully we will still see it before the year is out.

Negotiations with Haye seem to take, like, forever. Wlad usually fights 3/year, but since Haye entered the picture in fall 2008, it's down to 2/year (OK, Wlad lost some months to surgery).

So, IF Haye defeats Harrison in late fall and starts negotiating ten weeks AFTER the fight (as he did after the Ruiz fight), we might get a lucky Easter egg in 2011.

I think he will not start a negotiation before Vitali announced his retirement. And Haye will boast he chased Vitali into retirement.

I was kind of a fan of Povetkin, to be honest. The guy fought never a opponent with a losing record and was doing very well. But Sasha lackes real power, and when he has his man in the corner, he doesn't know how to finish things off. He has also the routine of fighting forward all the time and eats a lot of rubber during a fight agaisnt B+ opposition . This guy is made for Wlad and that doesn't make me to happy about this fight.
Still ... best opponent Wlad faces in a while...

I don't think Povetkin has much of a chance against Klitschko. But he's not as terrible as you put, or he wouldn't have had the success he's had so far. Imo he's one of the top challengers, a credible challenger.

And that's what challengers are supposed to do, take risks and test themselves against the best, even if it's a bad style-matchup and they're the underdogs. David Haye take note.

Povetkin's always looked distinctly average. I'm not sure what the fuss has ever been over him.

It absolutely does factor into winning a Gold Medal when your opposition is mostly garbage.

    Who else competed that year?

In the amateurs, especially at heavyweight, stamina and a good chin will carry you a long way.

He manages to smother his lethargic opponent, and fire off combinations, he hits them more than they hit him, he wins.

That's exactly how he managed to beat Chambers in the pros. Chambers percentage of landed punches were more than twice that of Povetkins, but Povetkin managed to land more twice the amount of punches.

The guy is a punching machine, but it seems as if he's been avoiding punchers, and he clearly has shown no ability to box on the outside.

The guy is very one dimensional. Like I said, he's like a heavyweight Margarito.

After witnessing what an out of shape Eddie Chambers did to Povetkin in a loss, if Wlad can't get him out inside 6 rounds it would be a shame.

Wladimir has a guy here that he can look SPECTACULAR against. He really needs to go out there and put a stamp on this fight.

Didn't Sultan Ibragimov knock Mora out in less than a minute before he fought Wlad?

Don't get too upset with Haye. I understand he is trying to get the word out in Klitschko fashion. His gardener has been unusually busy with some new shrubs and the guy that fills the dog's bowl is visiting family. When that dude gets back - and has the dog's bowl filled with kibble - he'll drop by ESB and start a few threads to update everyone.

    Patience.

That's kind of the same way I see it, Kirk. Povetkin's good enough to deserve his shot, but I don't see him bringing enough to the table to beat Wlad.

Oddly enough, I'd give Povetkin better odds against Haye even though Haye's got the better chance against Wlad in my book. AP at least gets credit for (finally) taking on the top dog in the division instead of going after easier pickings.
