Getting lit up in sparring is NEVER A good sign.

 

Guys who are big bangers don't make the best sparring partners.

Even if that's what you are facing come fight time.

And especially not if you are in the twilight of your career.

Plenty of big names had their careers effectively ended in the gym by getting pole-axed prior to it officially happening in a legit fight. You can't unscramble an egg.

You don't want to be getting knocked around in sparring prior to a big fight. Or hurt by a big banger. The fact that a guy is marked-up though isn't necessarily evidence that he's been knocked around or hurt. It can just mean he's done some hard rounds. You need a few of those but perhaps less so as you get older. It's one of the signs that a fighter is no longer prime - he can no longer spar the kind of rounds he used to when he was younger against the same level of opposition.

It is helpful to use sparring partners of similar size and physical strength to who you are fighting.

I think a guy like Dubois fits the bill there.

You also want guys who have decent skills & hand speed so they sharpen you up. Again, Povetkin looks to have that aspect covered.

 

That was Parker's strategy but this 'gassing' never occurred. AJ learnt his lesson from the Klitschko fight and now fights at around 240lbs.

 

Povetkin is someone with very pale skin, it's normal for him to be red faced after any vigorous physical activity.

 

The difference is povetkin will apply much more pressure than the cautious parker did

 

Povetkin himself is 39 and was gassing out after 5 round in his last fight. We also know he was on a stamina enhancing PED during his prime which he no longer has.

If you are expecting a buzz saw performance from povetkin prepare to be dissapointed.

Povetkin also knows how to get himself into position to where he can land damaging punches. Parker was consistently putting himself out of range to punch Joshua without Joshua doing anything.

 

Seriously, this is an extremely dangerous and a terrifying mismatch. The size difference is too gigantic for Povetkin to overcome. The much smaller Povetkin faces high chances of death and potentially getting killed in this mismatch

 

Povetkin was blowing hard halfway through the 2nd round against Price for goodness sake.

He's finished, if he doesn't get a KO in the first 3 rounds then it's going to be a bloodbath.
