What Wlad did against Povetkin was not a 'skill'. Reaching out to grap Poevtkin by the neck along with every other foul he committed would have gotten him DQ'd outside Europe. Wilder would have been DQ's had he behaved like that as well. Anybody can win fights being allowed foul constantly like that
Povetkin is already the highest ranked contender in the WBC ranking, although Jennings was the mandatory challenger. Now Jennings is set to face Klitschko. So Perez (#4 in the last ranking behind Wilder, Pove, Perez) might be the 2nd highest contender soon. I expect Povetkin vs Perez to be a wbc eliminator ... if that fight happens. The WBC wiped tears when they saw the purse bid for Klitschko-Povetkin ... and that they won't be a part of that story. The WBC definately would encourage a fight between Wilder and Povetkin. So expect a WBC title fight in Russia soon. Either Wilder would collect those 10 million bucks, or he would whait for a purse bid ... or he would make a "Quillin-move" because Haymon told him that it's better to relinquish a title than to defend it against a russian with a career high purse.
Povetkin´s got talent. But he´s lazy, underachieves and sometimes looks bad. But facing a dangerous man like Wilder he´ll know the importance of being prepared and I believe he´s got the tools to defeat Wilder.
There was a thread on here that reported Finkel claimed they could make 10 million fighting Povetkin in Russia. Everyone scoffed stating that there is no way Wilder could make that much to fight Povetkin, since he only has the WBC strap. So, I have to wonder about the credibility of this source. Wilder would make easy work of Povetkin, regardless.
There is a skill to holding, it isn't just grab hold and that's it. Fighters who don't know how to hold get ****ed up on the inside when they try it incorrectly. But agreed Wlad's clinching was excessive in that fight even for him.
Povetkin-Perez is currently in talks for May as the final WBC eliminator. Povetkin's team wanted to speed up the process and get the title shot without fighting an eliminator, so they offered Wilder $10mil. However, it looks like Wilder's team would rather play a "stay safe home" game. Now, if Povetkin beats Perez next, he will become the WBC mandatory and would likely be able to force the purse bids after Wilder has 1 voluntary defense.
This would actually be the easier route for Povetkin as no doubt they would make a huge bid for the fight and win the purse bid and control where the fight is etc. I think Pov will beat Perez who has looked very mediocre since the Mago fight.
I wouldn't be surprised if the fight was close early or even Perez outboxing him slightly, but I definitely don't see Perez beating Sasha. Well, it doesn't matter. Povetkin is not after Wilder, he's after the belt.
Clinching is part of boxing and sporadic holding is mostly accepted. But Wlad doesn't just hold, he hoists himself up onto guys shoulders and forces all his weight down on their backs. There's nothing skilful about that. Thats straight up cheating.
That is true but Wilder will then be stripped. Is he willing to give up his belt for not fighting a mandatory?
