No, I'm kidding, he beats Wepner. But how does he beat Moore, Patterson, Folley, Machen, Johansson and Valdes when he's rarely mixed with that level of competition ? And why do you call him world champion when you know Wlad was/is the champ whenever Povetkin held a 'paper' title ?
Dundee, Arcel, Atlas. Many more in conversations Ibe had over the years in gyms in the NY area. Why all the emphasis on weight, size, physique? I've been involved in this sport for 40 years and it's only the last 10 years where these are considered deciding, important factors in the hwt division by FANS. Your last post ignores what I have posted. Weight is of major importance in lower weight divisions where 5 pounds means plenty. This does not mean a natural 170 pound fighter is going to be favored fighting Joe Louis or a Dempsey or an Ali. Boxing is a skill sport and those skills have been eroded at least at hwt to a point today that fans ignore skill and instead place great emphasis on non skill factors. Why is it that none of these top contenders has been trained to throw a left hook properly THAT should be what you write NOT how big they are! In some ways it's the dumbing down of boxing fans that has exacerbated the skill decline in the hwt division. I won't pay to see any bout involving any of these fighters since I am being fed a poor product. Fans want to see Primo Carnera sized hwts without great skills and that's exactly what we are getting.
No the generalization is that you said the fatboys of today aren't beating the guys of yesterday who went 15 rounds as if to imply that all modern heavys are fat and all guys pre-1990 were 15 round warriors.
nope you generalised it to all fatties and furthermore generalised it to ALL fighters of yesteryear. its just you using the word "all", which is generally a stupid thing to do, there are no absolutes, ever. You must know this. you also brought up chuck wep for some unknown reason.
He beat Ezzard Charles and nearly beat Archie Moore in 1955. Think a fighter who sucked could do that well against those two hall of famers? He worked his way up to number 1 most logical contender status for the crown. He didn't suck, not at all. A big tall fighter who could box a bit had a good left jab and was a dangerous puncher https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xucbDkwcH5A
Two of those guys never saw Povetkin fight ( Dundee and Arcel ) and they were alive when there were few men 220+ pounds who could box. As such their opinion doesn't rate, as today the entire top ten is over 220 pounds. The other ( Atlas ) is biased so you can't take what he says are gospel. Atlas has been wrong more than anyone I have seen on fight picks. By the way Povetkin has a very good left hook. Watch him and you'll see. Others are correct; here Povetkin is being vastly under rates. PS: Where did Louis, Dempsey and Ali enter this thread. We are talking 1950's, and by using them you pretty much are saying Povetkin does well in the decade.
I agree. The whole concept of bigger and bigger muscles is better is bull****. The great punchers have smooth muscles, not bunched up bodybuilder ones and talent is talent. The past 17 years or so in the heavies have been dreadful
http://youtu.be/olYxX3Bi6ZI Povetkin is clearly skilled. Savage finisher, good combination puncher, accurate and tough. He would beat most 50's fighters.
