After Povetkin's performance yesterday I've seen a few people say Hunter's stock has gone up. Its been a good few months since Sasha and Hunter fought, who did you have as the winner of that contest now that some time has passed?
Povetkin won the fight by a couple of rounds. And he scored a knockdown that the Matchroom referee didn't count, Hunter was with Hearn at that time.
Hunter should have won. Look at both men's expressions after the fight. One was angry about the draw, while the other was glad. But that doesn't matter now. Povetkin scored an awesome KO win and we should be talking about that.
I rewatched the fight last week and I may be a bit biased as a Povetkin fan, but trying to be as objective as possible, I had a draw. However, I think the ref should have scored the knockdown and in that case Povetkin would be winning. It wasn't the case though, so I have that draw. Anyway, a draw was a good result for both fighters. Hunter established himself as top contender and Povetkin showed that he's not shot yet at his age.
Round 1 - Clear Hunter round, stunned Povetkin twice with right hands. Round 2 - Hunter hurts Povetkin again with a right hand early, but Povetkin lands a big right hand of his own near the end of the round but Povetkin landed little else and Hunter landed his jab throughout the round, another clear Hunter round. Round 3 - Povetkin wakes up, starts landing consistently to the body, Hunter does very little in this round, clear round for Povetkin. Round 4 - Hunter is looking to get off first and box while Povetkin is stalking and looking to slip and counter Hunter's leads. Close round but Povetkin's punches looked sharper and landed with more authority, so Povetkin round. Round 5 - Hunter starts off fast, lands a hard right hook and keeps Povetkin on the end of his jab for the first half of the round. But Povetkin rocks Hunter into the ropes and wins the 2nd half of the round as he starts to pile on the pressure. While a round of 2 halves, Povetkin again is the one landing the harder, sharper shots, Povetkin's round. Round 6 - Hunter controls the round behind his jab, Povetkin does little apart from land a few body shots and is starting to look tired in there. Clear Hunter round. Round 7 - Hunter again starts well boxing behind his jab and controls the first minute of the round. Povetkin starts to land a few shots and just as it looks like he's about to rally in the round and take it from Hunter, Hunter lands a hurtful body shot that makes Povetkin grimace. Hunter unloads, Povetkin replies but Hunter gets the better of the exchanges. Close round but Hunter wins the round edging it on volume and that hurtful body shot. Round 8 - Hunter abandons his jab in the first minute of the round and looks to fight up close with a tired Povetkin and again looks to be getting the better of the exchanges up close, matching Povetkin for strength in the clinches. Midway through the round Hunter lands a flush right hand and again mauls Povetkin in the clinch. Povetkin tries to rally in the last 30 seconds doing his best work of the round but it's another clear Hunter round. Povetkin looking very tired but Hunter too beginning to show some signs of fatigue. Round 9 - Hunter again starts the round looking to trade and out works Povetkin but then gets back to his jab. Povetkin lands a glancing right hand lead midway through the round and looks to follow up this success but walks into an uppercut. Both are looking tired as they both clinch more and more and look to fight more in the clinches. Very close round you could score this for either man, drawn round. Round 10 - Povetkin comes out for the 10th looking exhausted, he fires a quick combo to try and trick Hunter but as the round unfolds it's clear Povetkin is running on fumes. They exchange body shots, it's another ugly round but Hunter is now backing Povetkin up. In terms of clean effective punching there's not much to separate them in this round but Hunter wins the round on ring generalship. Round 11 - Povetkin comes out trying to muster one last effort, throws a hard right hand which Hunter blocks. But Hunter himself looks to be trying to muster one last effort as he's gain moving more and pumping out the jab to head and body. Hunter unloads a combo to the body and the head which knocks Povetkin off balance and reeling into the ropes where a big right hand stuns Povetkin again. Hunter looks to take Povetkin out, knocking Povetkin's head way back with another big right hand. A clash of heads gives Povetkin a much needed respite. Hunter again lands 2 big right hands. Huge round for Hunter. Round 12 - Hunter starts the round as he ended the 11th landing right hands on Povetkin. Povetkin responds catching Hunter with a right hand to the back of the head, Hunter is hurt. Povetkin presses while Hunter looks to recover, both get tangled and fall to the canvas giving Hunter a much needed break. When the action resumes Hunter looks to have recovered and lands a few decent shots but both men a tired and little is landing. Povetkin lands a couple of body shots to end the round. Close round but I'll give it to Povetkin as he hurt Hunter. So I gave 7 rounds to Hunter, 4 rounds to Povetkin and one drawn round. Competitive fight, if you give Povetkin every single close round maybe he earns a draw or wins by 1 point but I see a much stronger case for giving the fight to Hunter, especially as he hurt Povetkin so many times.
The it's a resounding Hunter UD from best scorers on the site. Including you @FastSmith7 . In no way shape or form was there a pathway to victory for Povetkin.
I don't even remember that fight tbh. I think all HW boxing since Tua-Ibeabuchi has been on the frontlines whenever I need to clear my brain cache.
I felt it was a bit of a robbery, definitely not through corrupy judges (see Canelo - GGG 2) but three incompetent individuals who have 0 idea how to score a fight. I do wonder what training or procedure one goes through to become a judge and how they allow the same judges to score both boxing and MMA fights.
