Alexander Povetkin wins via KO 10 and continues to make his way to the eventual Klitschko rematch. I predicted that Povetkin would get the better of Takam in the exchanges and favored with to win a decision or a possible late stoppage. It eventually happened but the fight didn't exactly go as I thought to be honest. Here is my quick review: Povetkin started slowly and didn't really commit during the early rounds, he was probably reserved due to Takam's reputation of a highly active pressure fighter with an iron chin. Takam obviously took advantage of Povetkin's tactics and although there wasn't much action during the first 4 rounds, Takam was ahead on the cards and even managed to catch Povetkin with some pretty good shots. After the scorecards were announced (judges had Takam ahead obviously), Povetkin seemed to be starting to bring the action to Takam and started to initiate exchanges instead of just being reserved expecting Takam to come forward. Both boxers were exchanging some good blows and the fight got a lot closer. Then Takam caught Povetkin with a really hard punch right on the chin and it looked like Povetkin might be in trouble. However, Sasha showed the champion mentality and determination. He actually recovered almost immediately and responded with hard punches and combinations of his own. After the 8th round, Povetkin was narrowly ahead but it became more clear that Sasha was taking over the fight. He was tagging Takam more and more often, and eventually knocked him down. It the 10th round Povetkin finally broke the opponent with a hard, precise combination that ended with a hard blow on the chin (Sasha's signature actually) which knocked Takam out. It was a really good fight, Povetkin showed a strong mentality and overcame the early difficulties to score another impressive knockout. I must say that Povetkin's timing wasn't good, especially early on. Later during the mid-rounds he got it right but there were signs of him not being in his prime anymore (although he is still overall very good). Anyway, he won this fight due to skills, but also due to his heart, will and determination. As for Takam, I have to say that he is better than I expected. He showed the ability to completely switch the gameplan and make it work. Many thought that he was just a come-forward brawler who mainly relies on his chin, but he also demonstrated that he is able to keep the distance when required (which perhaps somewhat confused Povetkin as well), and it was working early on. Once again, it was a quality fight with a lot of action just as most of us were expecting. At the end, Povetkin adds another KO victory on his resume. Feel free to share your thoughts.
The first 8 rounds were close. I had it 76-76 after 8. Povetkin had some trouble dealing with Takam's long arms and was getting hit as often as he hit Takam. But Povetkin adjusted and threw more combinations in the 9th and 10th, and dominated.
Don't think Povetkin expected Tackam to box off the back foot behind a jab. His long reach gave him a lot of problems but Povetkin adjusted and got the job done. Good win.
It’s very surprising that for 4-5 rounds Takam was that good at outboxing an olympic gold medalist while many people agreed to say that Takam was only good when he is agressive, a volume puncher (good stamina). Also, Povetkin was known for having stamina problem and finally Takam ran out of gas, stop attacking and got KOed.
Takam should have used his jab more often and more aggressively, especially when it was becoming clear that Sasha was winning most of the inside exchanges. That could have given him a chance to catch Povetkin, who to his credit boxed with discipline. Needs to work on his jab more though.
Sure Takam fought well but Povetkin bit down and broke his opponent in the championship rounds. Povetkin basically took his time and solved a complicated puzzle.
The one major criticism i have about Povetkin is that he's a slow starter. Even against a shopworn guy like Ruslan Chagaev, i had it 4-4 after 8 and he needed a pep talk by Teddy Atlas to win the late rds. Same thing happened against Huck and Takam. If he can start quicker then he could have a chance versus Klitschko but once you let Wlad get some rhythm it's pretty much all over.
Povetkin displaying brilliant knockouts over world class contenders only adds to Wlads legacy. Wlad knocked povetkin down 4 times, and won all 12 rounds on the scorecards.
Yet you had Povetkin winning the first 4 rounds 40-36....so now you're saying Takam won the last 4?-(
The early rounds were kind of hard for me to score. Both fighters seem to score about the same amount of punches but Takam simply scored punches here-and-there throughout the round while Povetkin limited his offense to occasional combinations. It was one of those fights that smells a little bit fishy to me, not unlike a Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. fight. The winner seemed to "start slow" or opponent gassed later. Maybe Povetkin did start slow, maybe Povetkin did wear down Takam, maybe Takam did gas or maybe somebody was using PEDs ( they're all over the place in professional boxing and the closer you get to the top the more you will find. ) Could be Povetkin wasn't active in the early rounds because he wanted to save his strength for the later rounds and pour it on then. I guess we'll just have to accept the results of the doping tests & give Povetkin credit for fighting a smart fight.
Very surprised, with Povetkin. And I will give him credit for that fight. I didn't think he would have been strong enough to take out Takam like that. Will be interesting to see him fight somebody like Stiverne. Although I still think he would probably get put to sleep.
i think Solis could give Povetkin problems. He has a decent chin (if we believe his 1st round KO vs. Vitali was due to his knee and not due to a glass chin). He knows how to frustrate opponents. I think even a fat Solis could steal 5-6 rounds from Povetkin and make it real close.
