How on gods green earth did Povetkin beat Byrd and win every round against Larry Donald? What am I missing? What I saw last night was a very limited heavyweight. Povetkin is slow footed for his size. His handspeed is fair to average. His defense is fair to poor, he gets hit with straight shots and drops his hands when pulling out. He looks like he would swell and cut so easily with his fair skin. His power was nothing to be admired. He is not an accurate puncher and wastes a tremendous amount of punches. His strengths. He obviously has a winning attitude. When Chambers would hit him clean he always answered. He has a good work rate and throws a lot of combinations (even if he only lands infrequently). I do not see anyway this guy would beat a prime Chris Byrd who would seemingly box circles around him. I did not see the Byrd fight and I am assuming Byrd has really fallen as a fighter. So what am I missing? How is this guy beating quality opponents? Chambers looks like he was paid off last night to not throw punches. I believe he had thrown like 15 total punches in round 11 and 16 in round 12! Chambers hit Povetkin at will. Again, how is this Povetkin winning against top people? He looks like a slow plodder who could fight at cruiser and not even be special at Crusier!@
I said in my posting this is an impressive list of quality people he is beating. My question is how is he doing it? I am not seeing this guys attributes. I did not see the Byrd fight. A prime Byrd, from what I saw last night, would not lose rounds to this guy. Byrd would easily outbox Povetkin. Povetkin's only real attribute in my opinion is his desire to throw punches. He looks very average to poor in other categories. Those of you who saw the Byrd fight, was it a fallen byrd or does Povetkin have something I am not seeing fron the fight last night. Again it appeared that Chambers gave this fight away like Bhop gives away all of his round by throwing 10-20 punches a round.
It is impressive but alot of you talk about him like he is new to the fight game he is 28 and one of the top ams of all time hardly a novice. If he wasn't fighting decent guy at this point he would just be wasting his time.
I feel the same way RightCross, his workrate truly is his only attribute I was able to see. Yes he did beat Donald and Bryd, both of which were pretty talented boxers with great hand and foot speed in there prime, but when Povetkin beat them, they were both in washed up fighters with no power in there late 30s, the threat of being hurt by either man was slim. I think Chambers was his best win, but an out of shape Chambers at that, who was out boxing him early on until Chambers got tired and decided to break for almost the rest of the fight.
I think the general agreement among boxers and boxing analysts is that an impressive amateur does not always make an impressive professional (look at Mark Breland). It is a different fight game. As far as the professional fight game, he is still not terribly experienced at 15 fights. What I am asking in this thread is what qualities does Povetkin have that I am missing..I can only assume it is desire to win, because his skills sets to me are nothing impressive. I would contrast Povetkin with a guy like Zab Judah. Judah has very impressive skill sets but lacks the mental toughness and concentration to place him as an ATG. See where I am going with this?
I understand what your saying but if he had turned pro at 23 he wouldn't have the same hype as they would have brought him on slower, but at 28 he needs to get decent fighters at a reasonable pace. I don't rate him that highly myself and think virchis, wlad, haye and other's would ko him.
Povetkin isn't spectacular in any one attribute individually. He has slightly above average power, a good chin, good stamina, pretty good combination punching (but sometimes accuracy suffers), excellent punch volume, average size. However, he has an incredible will to win, and he is smart when combining the attributes which he has to get maximum effect. He just knows how to solve the situations that come in front of him efficiently, and when summing up his individual attributes, he actually comes out very good in total... I think that's what makes it difficult to see. He's beaten some good guys in the pros, and even if you argue they were past his prime, he beat some excellent prime fighters in the amateurs and was a true great there. That surely can't come from an overated fighter like many are claiming.
No.... Alex is a very impressive pressure fighter, he is quite hard to catch clean and is a hurtful hitter .. He has shown cameos of his power in his stopping Bostice and Byrd. You have to understand like or unlike Amateur boxing the likenesses are somewhere, after 200 + fights you learn a few handy tools... He is the best heavyweight challenger today that has not yet featured proper in a title chance...
I would tend to agree with this assessment of Donald and Byrd. I did see Donald when he fought Valuev and he still looked like a decent fighter, yes Sasha won every round versus Donald. The fact that he won every round versus Donald, who is a solid B to B+ fighter is leaving me to believe that Povetkin has some intangible quality that is not readily observable.
I totally disagree with him being hard to catch clean from what I saw last night. Some rounds Chambers was landing greater than 50% to upwards of 70% of his total punches. As far as impressive pressure fighter? I would disagree with that statement too. I would say he is a pressure fighter who is average looking. He throws punches for the sake of throwing punches, he is terribly inaccurate and doesnt land many clean blows. I am sure he looks better against poor defensive fighters. I am not going to dispute his amateur experience it definitely helps and he was a great amateur, but we all know from experience that this isnt always the case.
--You pose a question...people answer that question, then you debate with them over the answer.... He hasnt lsot yet, and may not for quite some time..what you say is average to below average I say is good to great...Eddie Chambersha30 wins man..he fought a FMJ shell fight, got tagged, and quite throwing..thats like me looking at the Ali-Cooper fight and saying 'wahts so great about Ali", or Tyson-Tillis...he dominated Byrd...who has laways been a creampuff borefest...but he did dominate him....the guy is a natural talent...
I agree that he didnt look impressive last night, but i have been reading reports that One- he was sick during the final stages of his training camp, which may have affected him from peaking at fight night and the other one is that he said himself that Chambers fought differently from what he expected, so perhaps he didnt adjust as well as we might have expected from him, but dont worry, i think we will see plenty more fof him and find out for sure.
This is a forum and we debate issues here. We do not just accept what others say and that is the end of it. Your point about Ali is ridiculous and reduces to absurdity.
Didn't see the fight so don't really know how it was going, but being in Germany, you just HAVE to expect an awful awful stoppage like that. I mean, WHAT?
