I have been hearing a lot of people lately questioning Povetkin's stamina. From my understanding, the man was an outstanding kick boxer and has proven that he has legs for ten round beyond any doubt. Comments?
Here's his punch count from the Donald fight (not counting any measuring/very weak jabs or soft body shots during clinches which HBO counts a lot): 1. 60 2. 58 3. 53 4. 49 5. 68 6. 56 7. 56 8. 70 9. 45 10. 51 Total 566 / 10 = 56 punches a round average A lot of people get the impression that he has bad stamina because he breathes very heavily in between rounds (even the early ones). But he has never actually shown problems with stamina and has never looked very tired in any match.
He seems to have a very high work rate in the fights I have seen. He has a pudgy frame so suppose people confuse that as not having good stamina
Well, his stamina is still a kind of question mark because he hasnt fought that many rounds in the paid ranks yet.He has never gone 12 rounds yet,and only once did he go 10 rounds(with Donald). He had been a kick boxer ages ago,and at the amateurs he didnt have to worry about his stamina that much. Byrd is a tough nut to crack.I for my part dont think that Byrd will win his upcomming bout with Povetkin neither by point decision nor ko victory, but if Byrd somehow manages to drag Povetkin into deep water and Povetkin runs out of gas due to overpacing anything is possible. Anyone remembers Wlad vs Puritty? Wlad beat the **** out of that living punching bag for 10 rounds, but ran out of gas and wasnt able to continue fighting anymore due to extreme exhaution.
True, but even IF Povetkin gassed against Byrd (which he won't) Byrd lacks the power or aggression to take advantage of the situation.
True. They teaching it in kicknboxing i think. Reminds me of funny HBO commentator during VK-Danny Willams fight. They started to say that VK breathing hard after first round And keep saying it until he knocked DW out in 8
For a heavyweight to let off roughly 50-60 shots a round, that is very good. Povetkin has already shown good stamina. Being smaller than some good heavies he needs great stamina. It'll be an integral part of his game or at least it should be. The Byrd fight will be a great indicator of what he has in terms of stamina and skill.
Actually I had a boxing trainer/physical trainer watch that and he came to the conclusion that it is actually a technique for breathing. If you take very deep breaths part of the oxygen you consume is going towards powering your diaphragm and that is ultimately wasted, by taking the kind of breaths Povetkin takes you get in the right amount of oxygen without working harder than necessary. Huki what is the heavyweight average?
