This was originally scheduled for super bantamweight. The returning "Method Man" Melindo came in 6 pounds over the limit, however. Before you jump down his throat over it, however, know that a) he is the naturally smaller man than Omayao, holding the IBF world championship down at light fly, and b) he is coming off a 2½ year layoff in hopes of snapping a three loss skid, winless in nearly half a decade since a slightly controversial SD over Hekkie Budler in September of 2017. By contract "Cowboy" Omayao has been an active journeyman on the Asian scene, but is also in a slump: his last victory is more recent, coming in 2018, but since then he is 0-7-1.

    Round 1

Melindo is pressuring and popping double left jabs at Omayao's temple before dashing in with surprise right uppercuts cleaving the sternum. Omayao is shimmying clockwise, using the full (large) ring with his constant lateral slides and keeping up a high peekaboo with a trickle of counter jabs falling towards Melindo. Not a heck of a lot of clean work yet from either man.

10-9 Melindo, clear ring general and grazed him a few times

    Round 2

Omayao is crowded into a corner and flurried upon, straight rights between his wrists followed by steadying jabs up top checking Omayao's retreat. Clinch attempt by Omayao but Melindo easily overpowers and shrugs him off. Melindo charges with a left hook low, right uppercut on the chest, and left hook up top combo and Omayao goes down but the ref calls it a slip. I suspect it was at least partly due to Melindo's punches, but his feet may have also been crossed. HUGE rips on the liver from Melindo putting Omayao against the ropes. He may get that KO2 finish after all. Crowd is antsy for it. Omayao weathers the storm well and stands up tall, on tiptoe, goalposts up and jabbing down at Melindo as he resumes circling. Melindo happy to work the body as that is all Omayao is giving him for target. Left hooks repeatedly folding Omayao nearly in half sideways. He breaks into a trot jabbing and even desperately slap-hooking to keep Melindo at bay. Nice firm 1-1-4 (double jab, uppercut) combo from Melindo.

    10-9 Melindo

    20-18 Melindo

A loss for Omayao would put him at the .500 career mark; if by stoppage it would also nudge that method at over the 50% line of his defeats (presumptively 13 of 24).

    Round 3

Omayao is popping out jabs from medium-long range and Melindo extends his calves and reaches past him with a long aggressive left hook. Very steady pressure from Melindo, rushing nothing. Omayao leading him around the ring, throwing naught but stay-away jabs on the backfoot. Melindo feints with the jab and barrels in with those uppercuts on the chest, landing just where the steepling of the arms begins to widen in Omayao's guard. El Metodico living up to his moniker, breaking his man down gradually.

    10-9 Melindo

    30-27 Melindo

    Round 4

Omayao is getting backed up constantly, partially blocking the long reaching double left hooks of Melindo with the rear padding of his right glove. Omayao is unable to find any consistent countering opportunities on the perpetual move as he is. Melindo just keeps moseying along after him, locating with the jab and then ripping hooks to body or head where he can.

    10-9 Melindo

    40-36

He is absolutely no featherweight, but Melindo looks decent here. Granted, even if he were competing down at fly or super fly he would need to show a lot more to justify his chances in a rematch with any of his three consecutive Japanese conquerors (Nakatani, Teraji, and Taguchi) but, he looks as if he could probably contend...idk, somewhere. :nusenuse:

    Round 5

Omayao is starting to embolden himself a little with a 1-2 downstairs but quickly resumes orbit. Some lead hooks by Omayao now but not closing the distance to ensure they have a prayer of connecting, more just for show to form a protective moat around himself. Melindo is able to slice his way in surgically with the jab and score a hard left hooker-cut that gets a brief reaction from the crowd & commentator. Melindo not buying into any of that goading, however, sticking with his slow & steady gameplan. Omayao adopting something like a Philly shell and looking to stand his ground with a little catch & shoot for a moment, but abandons it hastily when Melindo edges closer and grazes him with a hook. FLUSH liver hook just before the bell. Melindo seems to be strategizing for a body shot KO.

    10-9 Melindo

    50-45 Melindo

So if there was any lingering doubt as to what was winning the deterioration race between Melindo's in-ring ability and his hairline - it is gone. Just like his bangs.

Hell that race was decided in his late-twenties prime. :deal:

    Round 6

Omayao is tripling and quadrupling the jab from a safe distance, only half-seriously tossing it outward to discourage Melindo. It actually on the surface at least appears to do its job - Melindo taking a breather, relatively. He still probably takes it on a few grazing body hooking combos, as the jab battle is a wash (Omayao ducking or blocking most of Melindo's, while his own either fall short or get parried on Melindo's gloves). Quietest frame by far.

    10-9 Melindo

    60-54 Melindo

Omayao ...quit on his stool? :dunno

Weird, after such a nonviolent round, feels kind of anticlimactic.

Just an inexplicable quit-job, IMO. He wasn't taking a savage beating or anything, given how negative a style he used and how patient (nearly to a fault) Melindo was - so why not just hang out for another 6 minutes of action, take your L on points and collect your paycheck but with a slightly improved survival ratio?

    Oh and btw:
I meant to say that a stoppage loss - as he brought on himself, ultimately :shakehead: - would prevent him from nudging his defeat-by-stoppage percentage back onto the 50% line to hopefully drive it down into the negative with subsequent decision losses. 12 of 23 was already over fifty percent, obviously.
