Simply didn't have what it took to affect the other man in the ring, probably due to size. Happens a lot in the lower weight classes. A fighter will put on a great, ballsy performance but just be too small because the other guy put on so much damned weight after the weight in. Gatti vs. Ruelas always springs to mind. Holyfield vs. Czyz is a sad case of this.
In a later fight one of the commentators mentioned that Ruelas unloaded something like a 20 plus punch combination on Gatti, unanswered. Sounds about right from what I remember of the fight. Ridonkculus.
..............Foreman-Qawi is the first one that comes to mind. Qawi was doing well early, then Foreman hit that little bowling ball of a man in the gut, and that was it.
Whitaker was pushing **** up hill trying to slug with Trinidad. They looked about two weight classes apart.
I just re-watched Archie Moore vs. Bob Olson. Both fighters fought like mirror images, but one had all the power. As soon as Archie got in with a few clean punches, Olson simply crumbled. Probably one of Archie's best performances.
Do you remember what Corrales and Manfredy weighed on fight night? Corrales was a big junior lightweight/lightweight and most likely had a fairly big weight advantage in the ring. I remember after getting dropped in round 1, Manfredy had a decent 2nd round, and started off the third nicely. He landed a nice combo to Corrales's face. Corrales just made a face at him, almost like he was laughing at Manfredy's combo, then proceeded to beat the hell out of Manfredy until the fight was stopped about 2 minutes and 2 knockdowns later.
Raf Marquez vs Chapo Vargas to a degree. Basically Raf dominated but Vargas had his moments, especially to the body but it was like a child trying to seriously fight his dad and just not doing any damage. Raf actually weighed in less at the weigh in but he appeared a lot bigger fight night. Him and Arce are some of the most meanest weight cutters of the last decade.
Gomez (Vs Sanchez). Despite winning a few rounds, Gomez seemed to be fighting in desperation throughout, Sanchez grinning with a confidence that he knew he would end it fairly soon.
I dont know for certain but have heard plenty of stories. I was told by someone that Marquez outweighed someone by Im pretty sure 23 pounds come fight night. He was a guy that wouldnt make up **** either but cant verify it. They both appear quite bigger physically then a lot of their opponants when they were at their prime weights.
What comes to mind for me was the Bowe-Coetzer fight. Bowe had big power and Coetzer's punches, although effective against less-than-great opposition, had little effect on Bowe. He hit Bowe with his best punches but it was clear who carried the bigger artillery, and in the end that was the major difference between them.
How could I forget, a perfect example is Monzon-Napoles. Jose has some early succes but with absolutely no effect on Monzon. Carlos decides to go to work in round 5 and simply crushes the smaller man.
