I've often wondered about this, but haven't done much research on my own. What's the career trajectory for these guys (by which I mean powerful boxing promoters in general, not King and Arum in particular)? Where do such people come from? And how has this changed through time?
Well, Don King has a PHD in Caucasianism for starters. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJbkxBQUQU0[/ame]
Bob Arum Route - Graduate from Harvard Law, get a job as an attorney in the Department of Justice, find ways to associate yourself with Muhammad Ali. Don King Route - Start an illegal gambling operation, stomp to death and/or shoot anyone who doesn't pay up, then find ways to associate yourself with Muhammad Ali. De La Hoya Route - Become the most financially successful boxer in history, use money to start your own promotional company.
Fighters want to make the most money. If you can convince a fighter you can pay him the most he will listen to you. If you can get the fighter under contract you are on your way. Money is what creates these openings. Don King didnt have the money but he convinced people and countries to lend it to him so he could promote fights and fighters. Hes one smart cat and an excellent salesman to boot. Arum is the same thing only he got his education in school Don got his from the streets but business requires a lot of common sense and persuasion both have that.
