You ever think that maybe its because elite fighters dont really sign up for the contender series.

I'm sick of these MMA vs Boxing threads. Its real old. Its been done for years and years. You watch MMA, I'll watch boxing and MMA when there is no boxing on. Have fun.

    LOL, exactly.

I actually think Lesnar has a great chance of beating Couture.

If anything you begin to question how much skill it takes to truly compete in MMA. Not to say these guys arent skilled but a collegiate wrester turned WWE star for 6 years, to football (gets cut) than MMA for 1.5 years and now a title shot against one of the most popular UFC stars in history?

Say what you want but you'd never have a boxer compete for a title with such a limited fighting background.

Don't care. Boxing is about 500 billion times better to watch than UFC, therefore I'll watch Boxing through thick and thin.

Best sport in the world and it ain't even close. :good

    Another point to add.

UFC is MMA. The best fighter in the sport, Fedor drew 13,000 buys against Lindland on Bodog PPV, than for Affliction drew well under 100,000 buys. The Sherk/Penn replay drew 433,000 but you forgot to mention that EliteXC on CBS drew SIGNIFICANTLY less in that same time slot despite it being a LIVE EVENT as opposed to a replay.

HBO is available in less homes not to mention they replay the fight a week later. UFC does not replay their events until months after the event. So why watch a PPV when you can watch it for free a week later?

"Hmm, I'd like to watch Calzaghe/Hopkins but I got plans tonight, I'll just watch it next week."

Pavlik/Taylor 1 drew incredible ratings on HBO last year and the TUF reality show on Spike has gotten considerably lower ratings EVERY YEAR.

No doubt the UFC is popular but to say they have young stars and boxing doesnt is incredibly short sighted. Liddell/Ortiz is the biggest PPV EVER for the UFC. That was 3 years ago and Ortiz is no longer with the UFC and Liddell is 38 years old. Couture/Liddell, Shamrock/Ortiz also are responsible for huge PPV numbers and they are all old or semi-retired. Fitch is not a young star on the rise. Hes a solid fighter who will never hold a belt in the UFC. Hes not a gatekeeper. Same with Bisping.

The fact that Kimbo and Lesnar remain the sports 2 biggest DRAWS tells you everything you need to know about MMA's fanbase.

More people know who Kimbo is than some of the best fighters in MMA.

Boxing is going down hill and been for a while, it's 4 real, its not the same anymore no big names anymore and all the big names are getting old now. UFC is getting bigger, this no suprised if u didnt see it coming you simply blind, It doesn't mean boxing can't rise again, but we can't just relay on one fighter to bring Boxing to it's feet, you need a few YOUNG powerful fighters to rise it, also in different weight classes. But UFC, is at prime for prime at this moment, all there top fighters are young and rising, its like boxing 10-15 years ago, DLH, jones, Tyson, Mosley, tito, Vargas, Lewis, etc etc...

The ratings for that show have been decreasing EVERY YEAR.

The Contender failed on NBC. One of the most popular stations in North America. To survive on a network like that you need to pull MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF VIEWERS. EliteXC will fail on CBS does that mean MMA is failing?

Than it fails on ESPN another highly watched network.

SpikeTV is what it is. Its not in every household and doesnt pull incredible ratings except for a select few TV shows. Its not difficult to survive on SPIKE.

Griffin and Serra are the only ones to win a belt in MMA. Serra is responsible for the largest upset in MMA history and lost his belt in his first title defense in a ONE SIDED beatdown. Serra is barely a top 10 WW.

Griffin is a good fighter. But aside from TUF 1 the quality of fighters produced from that show is mediocre at best. 85% of them are fighting in lower-tier organizations and the other 15% are undercard fillers.

You have to be the biggest UFC nuthugger to think that the fighters on TUF are actually quality fighters. They are absolutely terrible and you're guilty of the UFC hype machine. UFC's strategy for TUF, get 2 good fighters than bring in 14 tomato cans and those 2 fighters will wipe the floor with the other 14 and than BOOM, you got yourself a semi-marketable fighter.

Okay, UFC's fighters are NOT young and rising. GSP is the youngest fighter at 27. But Couture, Liddell, Lesnar, Silva, Jardine are all in their 30's.

Boxing is not on a decline. Its arguably doing better in PPV buys than it did 10 years ago.

I dont deny they need to market the sport better, put on better free events but we do have some great young fighters that are gaining popularity.

It may not be incredibly popular in America but in England, Hatton can draw 55,000 by himself same with Calzaghe, Khan is 21 years old and is filling stadiums. Manny Pacquiao is HUGE in the Phillipines and they have some great young prospects as well.

Just an FYI (and this is a year old)

Again, I'm a big boxing fan but I don't recall when a boxing event has ever drawn in over 4.7 Million viewers. Granted, it's on Spike TV which is not a "premium" offering (but not part of basic cable either)

Perhaps boxing needs to get back to one of the networks?

Ray has an excellent view on this subject:

Do you watch Mixed Martial Arts competitions such as the UFC? If so, are you a fan?
