I saw a list on yahoo and it was stating that a mayweather/mcgregor PPV would do 5m. The list had mayweather' fight on top the first 3 of the list followed by Tyson/Holyfield with 1.99 m back in 97 and I can recall that back then a lot of people had scramblers. Can you imagine if that was today
What about all the bootleg satellite and cable views for current PPV fights, plus all the internet streams? If you count those, I believe the Pac/May fight does over 6 million buys, easy! You also have take into consideration, how weary the viewing public, is of boxing PPVs and the amount of PPVs per year compared to when Tyson/Holyfield came out. No comparison.
I was going to find an alternative method to see May/Pac but the actual federal government stepped in a week before and shut sites down. That was a first in history that the U.S. government got involved in PPV hype. Money makes men act funny.
its not hard to imagine it doing similiar or better numbers then pac v may alot of MMA fans would tune in to see this fight to (most know mcgregor stands no chance) but just for the sheer fact of watching such an event take place
PPVs are a popularity contest that has nothing to do with fighting and everything to do with soap opera theatrics. This fight will be at it's peak in the press conferences for free. Two egomaniacs lip wrestling. Vince McMahon should sue for copyright infringement.
I believe you have hit the nail on the head as far as what PPVs boil down to. Nothing more than a soap opera, reality show, award show and a celebrity ho down all in one event, only to be let down, when the fight actually takes place, because of the politics involved. Oh and btw, first saying that I do NOT condone the following and without saying who, where and how, I know quite a few persons who managed to watch the May/Pac fight without parting with their hard earned money. Where there is a will, there is way.
