The Classic Forum had some negative things to say about Vitali's chances, and most with very good reason. This is not all about making people eat crow, so to speak. This is more about finding out whether on not people have changed their thoughts on Vitali, whether on not they feel this will influence their opinions on his title reign a few years back, or if this tells us something about the state of today's division.

    Good Foresight

    .
I was going to post more quotes, but you guys get the idea. Some others were picking Vitali to win. I'm just tired of quoting without seeing some feedback first. I'm sure those of you that were right will anxious to find your quotes and post them.

I picked Vitali to pick Peter apart, ala Lacy-Calazage, because Peter doesnt have the defense, compact punching, or urgency to make any impact. Basically Peter is a C Class heavyweight in the grand scale of things.

I picked Vitali TKO8 I think and thought Vitali would win every round. I was wrong in that Vitali wouldnt have stopped Peter if Peter didnt quit. Peter quit because he was told you've lost unless you get the ko and he knew he wasnt getting the ko.

Vitali was a level ahead in boxing ability, reach advantages and conditioning/athelticism and Peter was never going to get his shots off

However Vitali is there for the taking, Haye definately stops him, yes stops him, hes open for Haye's right and hook and is far far too slow and open for a fats dynamic puncher like Haye. Valuev may well beat him, Povetkin may beat him, Wlad beats him (wont happen), hell even Toney and Gomez have shots. He was just so open for the right hand tonight, and if you get off clean on Vitali beating him to the punch you can keep Vitali on the back foot you beat him, due to his style. Sanders would have beat him if Sanders wasnt a 2round fighter

I always saw Vitali winning this, now lets see him take on 1 of the real challenges.

Peter is ****. Utter ****. There was no way to be sure what shape Vitali was going to come back in, but I figured if he came in as 10% of what he used to be, he'd **** Peter up. Because Peter is just that ****ing bad. I ****ing hate that guy.

I picked Peter by a mid round stoppage I think, didn't think Vitali would have much left but he proved me wrong I was impressed by his performance at such a late age and after 4 years of inactivity.

Some were, but the majority were picking Vitali here, just as in the General Forum. I didn't make a strong pick, myself, as it was hard to know how Vitali would handle the adverse circumstances, but I would've taken Vitali if you'd forced me to pick.

Mind and logic said Peter, heart wanted Vitali to win.

Don't think I ever made a concrete pick. I was way too uncertain. So many variables.

It was more like 50/50. In one thread it was around 12-8 in Vitali's favor. In another classic thread, it was about the same in favor of Peter.

I am not criticizing people for picking Peter, I understand why they did. I just wonder if it changes anything about the way they feel about Vitali. Some were pretty adamant about how unimpressive Peter was/is before the fight, so I doubt the fight influenced them much at all.

Vitlai performance was excellent. His skills, speed reflexes, focus, stamina, and ring generalship were excellent. Vitlai threw on average 72 punches a round. There was only one clinch in the fight. IT was a clinic. There was nothing Peter could do. Vitlai got Peter’s respect early in the fight, and rocked him a few times. When Peter tired to advance, he was hit before he could get into range. Sometimes he was hit with combinations or counters. Vitlai’s foot speed, and angles made it tough for Peter to land.

As I have been saying for years, Vitlai is extremely hard to out box. In fact, he has never been down on the cards vs any man past round three. I have seen Ali and Holmes, two of the best put boxers the heavyweight division has ever seen lose rounds to lesser guys. Simply stated Vitlai’s height, reach, smarts, power, work rate, and skills on offense and defense and ring generalship are too much for just about anyone to out point him.

Vitlai has now authored one of boxing most impressive comebacks. He has the best round won to round lost ratio, the all time KO% among champions in any weight class, and has yet to been floored by a punch. Am I a Vitlai fan? Absolutely. Am I stretching the truth on anything I said here? Not at all.

My thought after this fight are this. It is a shame injures took 4 years off Vitlai's ring career, and it is a shame he never got a re-match with either Lewis or Byrd. I think he would have won both fights.

Having said that, I think Vitlai should continue to box. He has not lost a step. A title unification re-match with Valuev would be interesting. That is the fight I want to see Vitlai take next. For the record, I think Vitlai stops Valuev if it happens.

I did pick Peter and while in hindsight it looks more than silly , i'm still surprised as to how well Klitschko performed both in terms of reflexes, injury-lessness and stamina (73 punches a round). Peter having the worst night of his career didn't help, either. But that unpredictability is what makes boxing so interesting!

I was convinced that Peter would beat the "old shopworn broken down Vitali coming off of a 4 year break" but that he would lose handily to a prime Vitali.

    I was clearly CLEARLY wrong.

I don't even know what to make of Peter, still. From his chin to his will. He gets a smashed eardrum and gets off the mat three times again McCline and goes 12 there, to win, and then quits against Vitali?

    Murm.

I think it has to do with how ineffective he was against Vitali. It was completely one sided. Against McCline, he was in the fight and felt more of an urge to keep pressing. Most fighters, when they get to this level, have a love for winning. Vitali dominated him all fight long, and took any hopes Peter had of winning away. Had Peter ever managed to hurt Klitschko, he may have continued to take his punsishment with the hopes of dishing out some of his own.

The hostile crowd probably played some role in this. To me, Peter looked intimidated during the intoductions.

I think that it is starting to become clear that Vitali is the best fighter of his generation, (since Lewis). It is a bit of a shame that this is in so much doubt because most of the contenders just dont fight each other to force a clear no 1 contender. Peter clearly isnt the best in the world, after his failure to both Klitchskos.

A match up with his brother would be a massive money spinner and legacy fight for Vitaly. But it obviously wont happen. At this stage, he is well on line to be the fighter of the decade, which despite the fact that he has the important loss to Lennox does technically put him in line with champions like Liston, Corbett, Charles etc in an ATG sense.
