I think this Vargas vs. shane and Hoya would have a totally different outcome in the fight. i think shane and hoya got a washed up vargas in comparison. Trinidad absolutely destroyed Vargas's chin in their fight. He dropped Vargas twice in the first round with that devastating hook of his, and he still had problems with Vargas, it took 11 rounds to get Vargas out of there. if u notice in Vargas's very next fight he was dropped. I think it was by Rivera, who wasn't even considered a big puncher. In the first round of the Vargas-Delahoya fight Hoya said how he initially thought Vargas would be too strong for him. A prime Vargas had no problems at all with Quartey (despite being slightly past his prime). De la hoya struggled with him. Shane was losing the fight with Vargas in his first fight with him, if it wasn't for that stoppage due to Vargas's eye. Vargas didn't even seem hurt in the first fight with Shane. I thought in the rematch that Vargas would actually beat Shane, and Im a Sugar Shane fan. I think prime Vargas probably beats the 154 pound shane 116-112. The Delahoya fight maybe closer but could go either way. As much as i like Shane i never considered him a very good boxer. Very fast, very strong, great chin and powerful, but not the best boxer more of a brawler with fast hands and a lot of heart. I actually think Cotto is a better all around boxer than Shane is
I agree, I think Vargas was truly something special but unfortunately was never the same after his classic fight with Trinidad.
Oscar and Shane were more special. Vargas may have outmuscled Shane at 154, which isnt his best weight, but I believe Oscar always stands him up and knocks him out.
It ends in ko wins for both...I think the Mosley that knocked vargast in 2006 woulda knocked the Vargas from 2000 as well..
Obviously shane fought him when he was way past his best. But Oscar, I cant say he was that different from Trinidad, so what he got stopped it was a year later and he was still young so he had time to recover. I thought Winky won their fight fair and square. I dont think Vargas beats Oscar no matter if he is younger. Vargas dropped Tito but I dont see him dropping DLH who had a solid chin and I think Oscar outboxes him just the same. Maybe if Vargas is a little better it goes the distance but DLH was still the better fighter at 154 than Vargas ever was. Its possible Mosley could have been too small but I still think he was a better fighter than Vargas as well and would get a decision win.
Oscar wasn't the same fighter when he fought Vargas. If you think about it, Oscar last prime was at 147 pounds but to me ever since Oscar join with Floyd, Oscar wasn't the same fighter that throws alot of punches to go for early ko's. I remember Foreman said in the De la hoya vs Vargas fight "If Oscar had his old trainer, the fight would be over alot earlier" <<Foreman has a point. I mean example look at the Castilejjo fight, Oscar had Castillejo in trouble in mostly every rounds when Castillejo was in the ropes but Oscar after throwing combination back away many times. If Oscar had his old trainer, Oscar wouldn't be backing away like that. I think the shoulder roll style didn't help Oscar.
I think he could beat both of them, or get beat by both of them. Though i honestly think prime vargas.... the one that fought marquez, ike and tito, would beat mosley. Hoya imo.... well its hard to say. This notion that Hoya beats vargas 10 out of 10 imo is bs.... they had a great fight with hoya having the better conditioning and better chin. I think a prime vargas had a bit better of both of those then the vargas that fought hoya. So i just dont know.... they would be great fights, but they will always be close in my view. Tito Oscar Mosley Vargas Winky Ike basically the elite of the early 1998-2002, imo are only seperated by just a bit.... with some matching up better with others. Vargas and Ike are obviously towards the bottom of the list though, and i can see why people would say that mosley and oscar beat vargas no matter what, but pre tito vargas imo was a better fighter... with a better chin... and if their first fights were close, then fighting that vargas would be that much closer imo. That being said, vargas didnt fight the best version of THEM eather. Very good question.
Vargas llost all his big fights. He beat Ike, but Ike came up from 147 like Tito, Shane, and Oscar. The best fight he had was with Winky and I thought Winky should have gotten the nod.
Vargases problem was he had too much pride in himself things came way too early for him he was fighting at elite level at the age of 21 FFS he was just a kid when he won the world title and was still pritty young when oscar beat him, i think both mosely and oscar would take out vargas without much of problem in there respect primes, vargas without a doubt was an excellent fighter but he was wild and too machismo for his own good IMHO
At 154 a pre-Trinidad Vargas beats both Mosley and De la Hoya, considering jr middleweight is not these two guys' best weight. A shot Vargas gave De la Hoya a hell of a fight and a shot and washed up Vargas did rather well against Mosley.
Man shut up newbie. A shot Vargas that fought De la hoya? bull****. Man if Rivera didn't knockdown Vargas in the 2nd round, nobody would say Vargas was a shot fighter when he fought De la hoya. Vargas might not be the same fighter but he wasn't a shot fighter. But again Vargas might not be the same fighter but you know what? Oscar wasn't the same fighter either cause not only about at 154 pounds isn't Oscar best weight but ever since Oscar change a trainer in Floyd Sr, Oscar wasn't the same fighter that throws alot of combination like he use too. If Oscar still has his old trainer, Oscar would have tko that version of Vargas alot earlier.
Don't know about the fight vs Shane but the Vargas that faced Oscar to me seemed a better fighter than the one which faced Trinidad. I mean that in that his fight with Oscar was more tactical than his fight with Trinidad. As to punch resistance being lost, I think that's mostly a myth. Either you can take a flush left hook to the jaw from sluggers like Trinidad and DLH or you can't. My guess is most can't.
I agree with you 100%. You bring up very good points. Mayweather seemed to have developed a style in Oscar which seemed to not do him any good. I agree, in the Vargas fight Oscar got caught a lot when he used his shoulder roll, as in other fights as well. I remember the fight turning around when the camera is in Oscar's corner and he asks Mayweather, "Can I walk him down?" Mayweather says yes and Oscar beams as if he had fought the early part of the fight to please Mayweather and now wanted to fight the rest on his own terms. The truth is Oscar under Alcazar was a beast, a machine, and I don't know why the blueprints got ****ed up but they did. Maybe someone with more boxing knowledge can answer that.
Exactly Alcazar or atleast Steward wouldn't tell Oscar not to go for the kill if a fighter is in the ropes or in trouble in any way. I understand Floyd wanted Oscar to improved his defensive style like the shoulder roll in which is new for Oscar but it just didn't work. And you notice in the Mosley rematch, There was no shoulder roll type defense? But Oscar didn't have the killer instant in that fight or any other fights with Floyd Sr as the trainer. So if ppl want to say Vargas wasn't the same fighter when he fought De la hoya then i can easily say Vargas fought De la hoya when De la hoya wasn't the same fighter.
