I don't know what contractual obligations Ward is under to rematch Kovalev; but it's certainly the fight he should be looking for. However, I suspect that Ward would prefer to defend against lesser opposition back home in Oakland; make a few more million and then retire. I really can't see him moving up to heavyweight as he mentioned recently.
People need to stop hating on Ward, he is a warrior. He'll rematch Kovalev. He'll unify at 175, go to Cruiser and get a belt or two there, then take a fight against a very small heavyweight.
Retire for the sake of getting out of the rematch, then comeback when Kovalev has a different fight lined up.
Hopefully he gives Kovalev an immediate rematch. If not, than the most logical move for him would be to unify the LHW division against Stevenson. What I'd really like to watch unfold is a fight with Kovalev-Stevenson in the early spring time with the winner having a unification match with Ward in the fall. Maybe Andre needs some time off after that tough fight he had with Sergey.
I have had a slight change of heart towards Andre ward I was a huge fan going into the kovalev fight and i still admire him as a fighter but i have to admit having watched a lot of his interviews post kovalev fight, i don't see him taking the rematch. I think initially post fight he was interested in the rematch but i feel like now hes thinking the backlash and controversy wasn't as bad as he first anticipated and hes now happy with his argument of winning the fight and just happy he can say he won the titles, it looks great on his resume. I think he is still an amazing fighter but i have to say i just think he lacks the ultimate "supreme confidence" that is needed to be an ATG. an ATG would not be happy unless they got a convincing win they would want the rematch to prove it to them selves just like floyd wanted the maidana rematch, i know floyd was thinking dam how the hell did this guy make it seems so close, hell naw i ain't having that i want the rematch to prove i can whoop this guy convincingly. I feel like ward doesn't think like that he thinks dam how the hell did this guy make it seem so close, i don't want to go through that again i might loose. I hope he proves me wrong though and takes the rematch. That said, when ward gets in the ring an element of that supreme confidence inevitably kicks in and he is able to find a way similar to floyd, the difference is i feel andre ward doubts him self at times, not very often but often enough to effect his game where as floyd NEVER EVER doubts him self not for a dam second at any time EVER, its only a small difference but that's what makes floyd truly elite, To reach that ultimate pinnacle of excellence that floyd reached is extremely difficult the last final 2-3% that it takes is huge, You have British level euro level, world level Then you have another level where the truly elite get to and the jump from world to elite is greater than British to world, Andre ward is no doubt world level, But i don't believe he is elite at least not at this point.
If the rematch isn't agreed and scheduled by the end of the first half of 2017, it will never happen. The rematch needs to happen as early as possible, when the controversy is still fresh and the hype from the first fight is still in people's memories. That's when the rematch will make the most financial sense and everyone knows this, including Ward. If they don't have a fixed date by June or July 2017 then it will never happen and Kovalev will just move on while Ward will either vacate or retire or look for way to get out of rematch clause eventually and fight some bums in Oakland after a year or so.
