Looking forward to this, should be fun while it lasts. I'm expecting Cotto to pick up a mid-to-late stoppage.
It should transpire that Mayorga has nothing left, but if he does, he could be a real handful for Cotto - who needs to get the jab going and dictate distance from the outset. If Mayorga isn't shot, and can impose his strength, drag Cotto into a brawl, then there will only be one winner. It all depends on what Mayorga has got left, and how disciplined Cotto is at implementing an effective gameplan. Cotto should be okay though, Mayorga looks done.
Cotto late tko ko stoppage .Stopped Foreman late in his last fight 9 and with Mayorga getting knocked out off Mosley as well in the 12th .I would probably say late mid to later rd's 7 to 12.
Cotto's planning to use Lateral movement then take it to inside and break Mayorga down. I think Manny wants Miguel to bully the bully as well as not stand there for Mayorga to use him for balance. He said make him miss and you got him in positions he cannot control cos of poor balance. Stand and take shots on gloves and he uses you to work off. Cotto Stoppage Round 7. Mayorga will do something crazy.
That's right I remember that body shot ankle twist .Mayorga smokes though so I think he'll start gassing .They say Mosley's a bit old and he ko'd him late 12 so I still say rd 7 to 12 Cotto .
If Mayorga brings what he usually brings then Cotto could be in trouble here. Cotto is similar to Vargas in that he is technically proficient but is not very elusive when bum-rushed and when Mayorga unloads I don't see Cotto coping with it that well ; he's a bit too robotic to brush aside such frenzied attacks with the needed fluency to escape unharmed. A few years ago I would have gone with Mayorga but I suspect Cotto will have just enough to survive the early rounds with a faded foe and then take him apart when the pace of the fight subsides.
Mayorga: Cotto will lose, then join Ricky Martin's band I think it's going to be a good fight, entertaining but I think Cotto will get him late on.
Mayorga is way past his best, but is a genuinely dangerous puncher, and, despite his wear and tear, his toughness should see him through against Cotto, who, post-140 anyway, is definitely an accumulation hitter. Prime for prime at Welter it's an engaging tussle with Mayorga banging Cotto out at some point IMO. Now, Cottos movement and intelligence sees him outmanouver Mayorga early, before Mayorga roughs him up down the stretch and makes it closer. At this stage, Cotto will be more suited to this weight and his better quality should see him through. Mayorga hasn't fought in years and I imagine his walkaround weight has grown immensely. His style will only get harder for him to pull off as he's getting on and Cotto, who is also suffering from wear and tear and numerous wars against tough opposition, is simply the more well-rounded fighter at this time. Even though a peak Mayorga is a truly horrible matchup for Cotto. An awkward, dangerous beast with an incredible propensity to absorb punishment from big punchers. He would keep coming, and is a dirty, ruthless bloke. He'd damage Cotto for sure.
Cotto wins via stoppage with his accuracy and controlled aggression being too much for Mayorga who I think is old, somewhat dulled and way too wild in his fighting style to upset a tested warrior like Cotto. If Mayorga does stand a chance it would be down to a combination of the legitimate power that still remains in his punches (when / if they land in this case) and this highly unpredictable, wild style. Fantastic thread btw - the amount of info, photos, quotes in the opening post are outstanding.
