Looking through Boxrec ("Boxwreck as one of our best posters lovingly puts it ) there are KO's and TKO's galore, dozens and sometimes hundreds strung together. We gloss through great fighters resume and see those stoppages, and some assume they were all dominant. It was, after all, a stoppage. But many fights have premature stoppages, and simply reading a result of a fight doesn't tell the entire story of it. So lets hear some interesting ones, I'm particularly interested in fights that were going in the stopped fighters favor before the strange/premature stoppages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sugar Ray Leonard has a few of these ( Cue the crowing of the RedRooster ) I've never seen the Kevin Howard fight, but supposedly he was struggling quite a bit, being knocked down before a premature, iffy stoppage. I've heard it said that the Benitez stoppage was beyond irrelevant a pointless. Hearns stoppage. Same thing. Some feel it was premature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Recently, Vivian Harris/Lucas Martin Matthysse was one of the most mind bogglingly ****ing dumb stoppages I have ever seen in the sport.
this is truly terrible and the worst i've seen in some time but weaver/dokes takes the cake for me :!:
At least Weaver was hurt to some degree there, Harris was basically hit by a ****ing stiff breeze. :huh:huh:twisted::twisted:
true, i'm no harris fan but that was completely ridiculous. it was a bought ref: no other explaination. i've seen inept refs (ottke vs mundine) but this was different. no mistakes, just taking the money and stopping the fight
Without a doubt, the most unjust and unecessary stoppage I have ever seen: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAvYvg7lWQs[/ame] Took the shine off a nice little matchup between two guys destined for bigger things.
Ike Williams vs. Beu Jack.. Ridiculous stoppage!!!! I'm still pissed about it  why didn't the ref mind his own business?? Andrey
Good call, Marcel was giving him a really rough fight up 'till then. Great, under-rated fight - total barnburner. I love watching Duran's pre-title scraps; they're always very entertaining.
:good What does everyone think of this as a stoppage? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MF20j_IzXo&feature=related[/ame] Or does anyone know of the circumstances surrounding it. Wilde looked like he was still ready to carry on, despite being out muscled. He also had the punch to bail himself out, no?
On the face of it, it looks bad call but Marcel had been shipping allot of heavy shots, maybe the ref could see Marcel reeling before and thought he'd seen enough Its easy to say a stoppage is bad, if McClellan had been pulled out prior to him collapsing it would likely be called premature too. Thats an extreme example but its the refs job to look after the fighters Calzaghe has a good few premature stoppages though, ironically though Lacy should have been stopped/pulled out against him
Having watched the fight a few times, I think it was close. Marcel was not taking anything especially heavy and his legs looked steady. He'd also been implementing good upper body movement and holding his own in close. Terrible stoppage IMO. I can only speculate that Duran was more favoured as a Panamanian prospect than Marcel.
