...at least as far as I've been able to ascertain. In his 58 fight career only one boxer has ever managed to last the distance with him after being knocked down, and that was Monte Barrett when Tua was way past his prime. Considering that Tua has 43 stoppage wins, that means that if you got knocked down by him at any point you had a roughly 2% chance of making it out of the fight on your own two feet. Before Barrett there was zero chance. Now does anyone seriously want to argue that Tua wasn't one of the hardest punchers ever?
Interesting, hence "as far as I can ascertain." Do you know of anyone else who lasted the distance after a KD from Tua?
It's hard to tell how good he could have been because his era was too strong for him. He was never beating Lewis and he couldn't even beat the next tier in Byrd. Him v Ruiz would have been an interesting rematch.
It's been a long time since I watched early Tua fights against Wainwright, L. Jackson and Hart. Don't remember them at all. If I'm not mistaken there were no knockdowns in the Jeff Wooden fight.
As far as I can tell, Foreman KO'd or TKO'd every opponent he knocked down (before his comeback in 1987), except for Levi Forte in a 10-rounds bout. I'm pretty sure you can find more examples out there.
Tua always had a firm ceiling to his talent. People talk about his bad management and not getting the right breaks, but I doubt he would have ever become a world champion, at least not one worth speaking about. He was much too beatable by fighters who could neutralise his style.
Maybe so, though I doubt that list is very long, at least amongst upper level heavies with a sizeable career.
He's pretty overrated as regards potential and how he'd do in H2H matchups, but how on Earth can you claim that his punching power was overrated?
i imagine with most heavyweights who have big KO percentages did stop most guys they drop Wlad- as i can think of dropped and didnt stop Byrd fight 1, Brewster fight 1, Haye if you even count that knockdown Haye- every heavyweight he dropped he stopped, he did not drop Valuev so he did not stop him I think Adamek stopped all the heavyweights he dropped Vitali- has only been the distance a few times and he did not drop those guys Tyson dropped Douglas and then we know what happened Lewis I cant think of any who went down and made it
