Bruno has a record based of being KO'd by solid word class fighters you mean, the rest were has beens and cans.
Funny how boxers get rated much higher since they have stopped fighting. If ESB was around when Bruno was boxing he would have been called a slow plodder, a protected total hype job who fed off tomato cans and wouldnt have gone 12 with Tony Galento. Now however he is some come of monster/destroyer.
Yes Bruno was the first HW Boxer to rock Tyson in their 1989 fight, and Bruno was also ahead on points against Lewis until Lewis KO'ed him in the 7th round. Action starts at 1:56 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpiq5cdvYDk[/ame]
That might be a good call, as if I remember correctly, Anders got Bruno's attention in the first, with at least one decent right, before being overwhelmed.
I don't think it's in any way revisionist regarding Bruno's abilities, to believe he would beat both Price and Fury.
I'd say Bruno beats both. He stops Price in 3-4 rounds and Fury a little later. Bruno's chin wasn't the bad thing is was his stamina IMO. He did far to much weight work they kept saying leave it Frank go home. But he just kept training and working on the weights wanting to look and feel the part but in the end all those muscles need oxygen and he was making himself stiff IMO.
Yes, Bruno was criticised in his own time, a lot. But a fighter like Tyson Fury is exactly the sort of fighter Bruno used to get panned for knocking over in a few one-sided rounds.
You are right, but I remember after the Jumbo Cummings fight the ol' man picking Noel Quarless to beat The Bomber...
Quarless was dangerous, but too vulnerable. His wins over Eklund and Gardner coincided with Bruno's scare versus Jumbo, so I see where your old man was coming from .. Quarless is the kind of fighter who'd very possibly put Fury on his ass. I remember Bruno v Banjo being hyped at one point about that time. Not sure why it never happened.
I guess Bonecrusher stopped that initially and then when Banjo lost to Currie, it was thought Notice could get the Lawless camp the British crown, which meant Bruno went the Euro route.
The Bruno that fought McCall and Tyson in their second fight was ar inferior to the Bruno from years before. As you pointed out, by 1995 he had become way too muscular to the detriment of his movement.
Ultimately its a question we will know the answer much better to in about 2 years from now. Fury has stepped up to fringe world class and coped well. Price, remains to be seen.
Price reminds me of Bruno alot, maunfactured, not a natural, not aggressive by nature. Fury likes a fight, enjoys being hit, has more instinct and passion for fighting. Price might still go all the way, but he'll have his Purity's, Brewster's and Sanders's on the journey there.
