Too bad about his chin, you can't do anything about that, but he was really starting to get to Sasha. I think the Russian corner was getting a little worried. Sasha ain't the same, clean. I can see why Price had a lot of people excited when he was coming up. He has some skills. He did all he could do not to take punches for the first 4 1/2 rounds; defense seemed to be "let me just make earmuffs until he stops punching." And I guess that's the only defensive tactic a guy with pure china can use. He never even tried punching while Povetkin was punching. I think he's be a great comeback opponent for Fury though. Some risk, but not big risk.
If he was actually taking anything, it was only meldonium. Meldonium was legal for decades, quite simply because it has never been proven to have a significant performance enhancing effect. And it was only banned for political reasons, because russians use it.
He did! Such a shame. Even when he knocked Povetkin down, a part of me was thinking "yeah but he's going to get KTFO, that's pretty inevitable, this just makes it more bittersweet for getting my hopes up that infinitesimal .0001%, even as I know rationally that it cannot be..."
He did well and performed above most peoples expectations. He came in at the best shape possible, he's been overweight in recent fights and was clearly very focused, probably knew this was his last one big chance to achieve something and resurrect his career. For me it was the best fight that night, Price will always be good to watch he'll knock you out or get knocked out. But class told in the end, Price has too many flaws to ever be anything other than a dangerous journeymen.
Sorry Bro, but he was CAUGHT was only meldonium. The guy's face went from a circle to a square, and he went from banging away at little Eddie Chambers for 12 rounds, and not even having him notice, to knocking hulking Carlos Takam out cold with one punch. He is the most obvious juicer in boxing, and there have been plenty.
And Price didn't fight well. He was scared, stiff, he was standing still. Professional boxing is not for him. He should retire.
That could be true. But again, if a 34 years old boxer fought like that and it was one of his better (best?) fights, he should have retired long ago.
I don't think anybody is disputing that Price logically ought to have retired a long time ago. He gave it a go against Povetkin, in what seemed like an epic mismatch, and early on gave a pretty good account of himself, didn't exactly get dominated bell to bell in every completed round by a consensus top 5 guy in the world, and even scored a Pyrrhic victory with the knockdown before succumbing in the end. He did plenty to be proud of as he rides off into the sunset, was a more dignified note on which to bow out than any of his previous stoppage losses to be sure.
Agreed. It would be a fitting end to his career that fight encapsulated all his strengths and weaknesses in one fight. Plus he can retire with the knowledge he never lost to a clean fighter, lol.
I would love if Fury called Price as his sparring partner for a potential Joshua clash going forward.
He wore Takam and stopped him late in a grueling and highly technical fight(one of the better top level HW fights in a while at the time and still to this day), he was tired, already down etc. Takam is also a smaller HW like Chambers albeit bulkier - Prime Chambers was also a pretty solid operator.... Would easily be a top 10 HW today. Put the Povetkin run post-Klitschko down to solely PED if you like. But the logic you're using is flawed here.
