Price v Thompson 2: Sanctioned Suicide

I agree he'd be better doing that. Last time the plan was according to Franny Smith ''Make it round 7 of the Wladimir Fight'' (paraphrasing from interview with Ingram Jones).

Problem is he tried to press the fight, His punches made no visible effect on Thompson. Thompson could try to make the fight a stinker and just wait on Price and it could turn out to be very boring. I'm not entirely sure Price's accuracy from range on the night was very good either. But fighting at range is a safer fight and trying to snuff out Thompson's advances any way he can.

Price has shown in past two fights that if you close range quickly and shuffle and slide feet into position that you can bypass his artillery and he tends to panic with fighters close the range quickly.

The worry is if this becomes a chess match does he have enough moves to checkmate Thompson?. He's rinsed out the jab,feint left hook and right hand set up. Punches well to the body but can he take those chances?.

It's a tough fight for him to approach. I'm not sure he's displayed enough skill and personality to outbox Thompson completely. I think he can beat Thompson but there's to much wrong with the February performance that i don't think a matter of months can change that.

Thompson showed a few times in round 1 he could slide inside the jab and fire a left hand to a Price that is constantly square on upper half. There's a lot wrong with Price as a boxer IMHO.

The power is there, The understanding and skill not. Bar some solid enough fundamentals.

Ah ****, how can I argue against that, it would be like I am disrespecting the late, great Manny Steward (a good contribution to the discussion, though). We will see on fight night, I strongly fancy Price to take care of Thompson.

 

Can David Price fight..? Or he just another big guy, who has been taught boxing mechanics..?

Audley Harrison has proven that he can fight, and come through bombardment more than David Price at times in his career.

Everybody is hoping that David Price can blast Tony Thompson out quick why..? Scared of him getting hit.?

I think he will have to come through heavy bombardment.

The KO punch in 1st fight wasn't light by any means, despite what most people might be thinking. If you rewatch it in live speed you could hear the punch very well, it had very good snap and Price's head bounced. Despite it being short arm punch, it was quite powerful. Count in that it landed on sweet spot and you have a man falling down.

Another thing is Price being supposedly in control of a fight. That's not completely true. Tony was very relaxed as usual and was jabbing Price's body very well. David threw a few good right hands, but not much else. So it was a toss up. David also fights quite stiff, which besides other things doesn't help the punch resistance as we have seen.

That being said, i think the rematch is a 6 to 4 fight for Tony. He's a great fighter albeit being old. I think David took way too big of a challenge to fight him in the first place. If he can somehow pull it off, all props to him as well as he will be back in the mix.

If this fight is on the level, it seems like a desperate act from a manager who has suffered some sort of breakdown over his fighter losing.
The manager is probably thinking he'd rather get straight to the moment of truth, and hope it falls his way, rather than living in fear and anxiety delaying the inevitable again.

IF, however, Thompson's performance turns out to be decidedly lacklustre, I will be very suspicious of how this rematch cam to be arranged.

I know Price is a giant and wants to take advantage of this.

But he is soooo upright. He needs to tuck the chin and bend the knees. When somebody is close to him he is a sitting duck. His head is right there in the air. Stiff as ****

 

Thompson was under-estimated because at 41 everyone thought he must be finished. It was certainly considered a BIG step-up for David Price though, a test (which he failed.).

I didn't think Price looked like a 'world beater' against the remains of Matt Skelton. In fact, most people admitted wins over Skelton and Harrison were quite meaningless and proved very little.
