Firstly I'm absolutely gutted for Price not only the loss but I just found out it was his 30th birthday today. I was was never on the Price bandwagon but was/am still very supportive of him. The first time I heard about the first Thompson fight I had honestly only seen Tony a couple of times, I went on the tube and came across the first Wlad fight I was amazed by the effort and heart he showed in that fight and couldn't understand how people rate Haye as having the best chance vs Wlad... Even today I waited until the weigh in before making my official prediction, Thompson came in heavy and looked done, I picked a Price UD. (Had shown power but incomparable to Wlad who was nearly taken the distance) After the first result I was shocked, not only by the result but by the lack of movement from Price or use of the jab, Tony came to Price's back yard and proved he still had fight in him. When I heard Pricey was rematching Thompson I was literally shook, I thought he would have at least two more domestic level bouts (Rogan, Sprott, Firtha) to help rebuild and gain confidence. Moving on to today's fight I was really backing Price to do the business (Being a fellow countryman) until... The f##n national anthem again when those scousers started booing again, that really pissed me off. As it started Price looked stiff and scared as anything which is obviously understandable knowing what "happened" happened, but there was still no jab or movement, from then on I knew it was over. Round two started and Price rocked Thompson with a big right, I was thinking "Please be patient and loosen up" as he still looked stiff and sluggish as anything, obviously he does the complete oppisite and goes all out throwing bombs and eventually puts the tiger on the canvas. I heard everyone around me saying "He's not getting up from that" but I knew he would no matter how out of it he looked, As it carried on I was still shocked by how Price was fighting and couldn't believe how easy to hit he was, it was only a matter of time. In to the fifth and Price's was taking a beating, he had no clue how to deal with pressure and and looked out on his feet, as he was backed in to the corner I was waiting for the ref to put a stop to it... NO, the ref gives him a standing eight, luckily he stopped it before it could have got brutal. My honest opinion on this is that it was for the best, if Tony had not made the count in the 2nd round the would have put him in with Chisora next. I don't give a s##t what Chisora's done outside the ring, he is a bull with a killer instinct a would have murdered Price. Price can stay or go with pride and my respect, going out with an Olympic bronze, gold com and British champion is something only a great athlete can achieve. Also massive respect to Thompson as well for not only getting the W but to take the rematch in Price's yard again (I know there is money involved but still) Thanks to anyone who actually read this.
Damn shame. I was a bit of a Price fanboy, honestly thought he was the man to take down Fury. I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong, you're going to get hit in boxing and knowing how to take it and move out of the way of it is a fundamental part of boxing (actually if you look at people like Pernell and Floyd it's probably an art in itself). He's sadly too old to be learning things like that now and it's domestic level fights for the rest of his career...
Price only fought 39 professional rounds against average and domestic level opponents prior to the first Thompson Fight , its just not enough proper experience and too many fights where opponents were blasted out within three rounds , he has'nt build up the stamina required for world level fights. If i were Price's trainer i would get him training mostly by sparring , i dont think bag work does much for him its ring craft he needs and championship level sparring sessions to build up the stamina required, but i would imagine the difficulty is finding decent sparring partners and also the cost of hiring them. Its by no means the end of the road unless that is what David wants , a rebuilding process will take time and he would need fresh opponents who are at a similar level to him.
I, like many others, had Price down as a serious prospect. I'm gutted for him, as he seems like a good lad. I still think he can rebuild though. Yes, I know he's nt exactly young but 30 isn't nothing for a HW. I don't know if his environment is the problem, (Lewis has tweeted that sacrifices have to be made) but I'd like to see him go abroad and work with some other trainers, a bit like Khan did after Prescott.
The way he quit is the alarming issue, had he got ko'd again id accept, go away and work on getting his defence water tight but no heart and a suspect chin, going to ring alarm bells.
Slightly different slant on it from me, I felt David dissolved in the ring emotionally the whole thing had become too much for him, the "anxiety" attack or whatever you want to call it completely drained him, he was gone at the end of the 2nd round if you watch him walking back. That's not normal, remember Klitschko against Brewster, it all just went from him (they tried to come up with some sort of drugging issue) but he just had an attack, anyone who has had one of those will tell you they leave you ****ed, you can't make a cup of tea let alone throw and take huge punches. He was thinking too much and trying to do to many different things and not take this shot and not go this way it was all just too much and it was sad to watch. Disagree with those that say its the end, the punch resistance will always be a problem but he still punches like a mule, has a decent jab, when he uses it, back to domestic level, couple of ko's get himself a European title fight and a couple of defences and stay there for 30 months-36 months, At 33 see what the world scene is like, with his power he would have a chance against anyone once the KLitschko are gone. Never forget Wlad ran out of steam against Puritty, who would not lace Thompson Gloves in terms of ability, he then ran out of steam against Brewster, who to be fair was similar quality to Thompson, he got glass chinned against Corrie Saunders, it happens, this aint over yet mark my words.
Nice to see a decent thread on the fight rather than all the **** that's being written on the others.
David crumbled Thompson is no joke and I couldn't believe the odds were against him again. Can't believe the crowd Showing no respect for a great fighter. Again! I do seriously think underestimation has lead to his Demise once again believing the hype etc. Think he convinced himself it was a lucky punch in reality he's a few levels above past his best. All respect goes to Thompson a true pro and funny as **** he seen it he's done it he's conquered one of our best..... Twice And if I'm honest Lewis confused the issue imo. It was almost like when Lewis got involved price would be Lewis but tht never is the cause Ithink more often than not fighters take a backwards step when a new style is force upon them u look at Khan offensive fight turned defensive yet he's being hit more than ever as he's not getting his opponents out. I don't see the point of going back to domestic level so he can knock out 5 more bums I think chisora is his best bet he look utter shite on his last fight and when scott dose him again he can take on a solid aggressive pressure fighter with no punch. If he can't take del boy out where is he going seriously
Great post. I still think if he gets his mind right he could operate on the world scene. His chin wasn't too bad last night. His nerves are terrible, dreadful, nothing to do with guts. I agree Price was finished at the end of the second, after knocking Thompson down! Showed guts to come out swinging in that third round, he knew he had no chance of lasting the distance. Arranging an immediate rematch, changing his training regime, and on his 30th birthday to boot was the most stupid ****ing matchmaking for a long while.
Won a lot of money. Never saw much in Price at all - always looked cumbersome, slow, plodding, uncoordinated etc to me with only a couple of shots in his arsenal. My opinion of him has actually grown since yesterday - he's better than I thought he was!
Me too. Didn't think he could mix it like that at all! And the 7/2 on Thompson was ridiculous. I filled my boots. Still wanted Price to win.
I had my money on a Thompson KO at 5/1 but it was no foregone conclusion , Price needed to seize his chance when he hurt Thompson at the end of the 2nd. He gassed very quickly and did'nt have the instinct to survive when under pressure.
You make some good points about Wlad. Wlad was a lot younger in does fights than price is now so had years left to improve. At 30 price has little to no time left to improve, the best he can do is fine tune his game. He spent to long in the AM's turning into a robot wasting his time going for Olympic gold.
Price had it too easy up to Thompson that was the problem, a bit like Khan before Prescott he didn't heed the warning. Price could be our Tye Fields, big strong guy but limited.
