Wrong, it's don't throw to the back of the head on this one. Williams was looking right at the back of Colon's head when he threw his shot. This wasn't a situation where Colon saw a shot coming, turned his head, and Williams had to correct mid flight and inadvertently hit the back of the head. He was looking at the back of Colon's head then decided to throw which is why it landed so cleanly and with so much force.
It's things like this that make it hard to justify a passion for a sport that is often brutal and unforgiving. I hope Prichard battles through this and gets onto the road of recovery - such a tragic outcome to what should have been a great weekend for the sport. Not to start pointing the finger of blame on what was a tragic accident but I do feel there are a few things that need to be looked at from this fight to try and ensure a reduced risk of it happening again. Ref Joe Coopers officiating of the fight was abysmal and Prichard told him on numerous occasions to look for the rabbit punches to no avail. While I'm not for a second saying Williams intended this as the outcome a fair few of those rabbit punches looked intentional and I did feel the Doc was too quick to dismiss Prichards claims of disorientation in the 7th. I also felt he should have consulted him again at the end of the break before the action resumed.
He was getting hit in the back of the head often and was motioning to the ref about it. That cutting the throat gesture after the low blow looks a lot worse now. And then the ref seemed to be rushing him when he was walking around holding his head and neck.. never letting go of his head. What a disaster. Poor guy. Hope he recovers. I have a feeling this is going to blow up bad and have big consequences.
One newspaper already calling it a crime: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news...lon-premiere-boxing-champions-crime/?page=all
This is why rabbit punches should be severely penalized one or two of them should be enough to get a fighter DQ'd they're way more dangerous than low blows, yet they dont get penalized nearly as much
I saw this fight live and was almost about to go to it as Mason (George Mason University) is about 20 minutes outside DC. I kept yelling at the TV that the 2nd knockdown at the end of the 9th round was clearly a back of the head punch. How could the ref not have seen that? I was actually rooting for Williams because I liked his energy in the fight, but a foul is a foul. Yes he did get low blowed something fierce, but the proper points were granted to him for Prichards fouls. Hopefully Prchard recovers.
Checked his fb page and he is showing improvements. Hand , and foot movement. Doctors are going to remove his breathing tube to see if his body is string enough to breathe on its own. Pull for the guy.
Damn, really hope it's not another case like Abdusalumov and he makes a full recovery. How did this happen anyway? I remember watching a fight of his recently and he pretty much battered his opponent with ease, it can't be from that?
Never mind, I just noticed that he had another fight since Harris. For some reason I imagined Harris happened more recently than it did.
