Arguello did sometimes struggle against boxers/movers so I can see Loma giving Arguello some issues.

But seeing how cautious Loma was against Lopez due to his size, power, I can't imagine how cautious Loma would be vs a much better fighter in Arguello who has much more concussive power and is even taller with a longer reach than someone like Lopez.

I think Arguello stops Loma in the late rounds after losing the early rounds if this fight is over 15 rounds.

I havent seen too much if Loma to decide on this one but I know Arguello, like Duran, had problems with speedsters....

At 130, i favour Arguello. I think Loma could have a lot of success but i also see him being overly cautious as he was vs Lopez. I think he would likely lose some of the early rounds and do well late but not well enough to win.

    Arguello competitive UD 12, 8-4 or 7-5.

    Arguello would eventually wreck Lomachenko.
Lomo couldn't deal with the height and reach advantages of the very average Teo Lopez.
Putting him in against a truly great fighter like Arguello, who was taller and had a longer reach than Lopez , would end up disastrous for him.
Arguello would have every advantage over Lomo other than foot speed.
After a few early rd wins Lomo would start to wilt from the punishing body attack, from one of the best body punchers in boxing history.
By the 8th rd, the tide would completely have changed and the question would be , not if Lomo can win, but will he survive.
By the 10th / 11th rd that question would be definitively answered with Lomo counted out on his back.

I don't think boxer/movers truly became an issue until he moved up to 135 & perhaps lost a step in speed. that's where he had his struggles w/ Vilomar & Ramirez.

he also had 1 of his toughest fights vs. another lanky boxer-fighter in Linares, who I thought was @ least even or perhaps slightly ahead of Loma when Loma came up w/ a body shot KO to pull out the fight.

I think this is closer than it may seem at first glance. Arguello did have problems with movers, but on the other hand Loma struggled with the height/reach of Linares, Lopez and Haney.

A closer look.at those three Loma fights shows more than meets the eye. Lopez has very fast hands with excellent power. Not Flaco Explosivo power, but the hand speed difference between Lopez and Arguello is significant. I think Loma would be more comfortable coming inside against the slower hand speed of Arguello.

I was at MSG for the Linares fight. I think Linares stylistically is similar to Arguello, and the timing of his punch that knocked down Loma is something I can see Arguello replicating. But what people forget is Loma dislocated his shoulder in this fight and still managed to score a body shot knockout. I'm not saying Loma knocks out Arguello, but I am saying Loma's arm injury that spurred him to the knockout probably prevented a late round domination of Linares by Loma.

The Haney fight is perhaps the most concerning fight if you are a Loma fan. Despite having below average power, Haney dominated the early rounds with his length and reach. Arguello's far superior power and his late round resurgence in many of his fights lead me to believe that if Loma was fighting Arguello instead of Haney, he would have lost a clear decision. This fight gives me pause in picking Loma.

Another variable in this fight is the footwork of Loma troubling Arguello. In the Pryor fights we see Pryor using the lead right to close distance and then step past Arguello who when turning would be on the receiving end of a Pryor punch combo. However, this would put Loma in range of that mortar right hand more than perhaps he would be comfortable with, so I'm not sure if he would fight inside as often as Pryor did.

I'm going to lean slightly to a Arguello decision (55/45) where Loma's volume and combinations would be competing with the powerful sniper shots of Arguello. But regardless of whoever wins, this would be a fascinating contrast in styles between two of my top ten favorite fighters.

Despite his great movement and agility, Loma has always been a pressure / volume fighter. All his movement is to set it up (which he does beautifully). There aren't really any performances where he boxes and counters excessively off the back foot. Whenever he does stay out of range his output is massively reduced. Then there's the issue of his reach.

I think Loma would have some success, but ultimately Arguello would shut him down offensively whilst Loma still does just enough to linger for a decision. Difference being that for Loma to potentially win he has to be 100% on form and totally focused for 3mins of a round, every round whereas Arguello only has to work consistently and pressure. And if Linares could catch Loma lacking you best believe Arguello could.

I think Loma can be a nightmare for any great who doesn't have power or is powerful but can't put it on consistently. Arguello is neither.

I was hoping you'd post on this one.

I think Arguello's body punching, power and ridiculous reach advantage could make it play out a little similar to the Lopez fight, where Loma just can't get going and when he does try to empty the tank, he's at massive risk of getting caught.

Arguello was a weird fighter when it came to fighting southpaws though, imo. Sort of like the opposite of what you'd usually see. Some guys when in an open stance are awkward to hit and can't land very much, so their fights become a match of handfighting, potshotting and falling into messy, scrappy clinches. Arguello, on the other hand, was less defensively sound against lefties, but much more dangerous offensively. It's led to some great fights throughout Arguello's career, and I think it would against Loma too.

But ultimately, I just can't see Loma being his High Tech/Matrix self against truly elite fighters. Especially not fighters with a huge height and reach advantage who could knock him out at any time.

Agreed with this. When Loma gets tagged / hurt by a shot (and he would) he seems the type to back off and use his savvy to survive, looking for later opportunities rather than go in and exchange, which is why I think it goes decision. Would work against a lesser power puncher, but not Arguello. Great post mate.

At Featherweight and Super Featherweight, Lomachenko and convincingly, his constant feinting up and down, setting up that stabbing left to the body, back over the top with the right, blinding Arguello with the poking right to create different angles of opportunity, level changing to set up punches, master bait, Lomachenko would read Arguello’s rhythm and Arguello wouldn’t read his.

And Arguello ain’t just walking through Loma, he wasn’t featherfisted at those weights, Lomachenko is a bad style matchup for Arguello.
