Who wins this great chess match of two smart boxers? Ali was kryptonite for big punchers, but Lennox was a little more than a puncher. Ali could probably cope with Lennox's power, and it doesn't seem likely he'd knock Lennox out either unless Lennox was foolish enough to punch himself out like Foreman did. Unlikely in his prime. Who wins this? How does Lennox handle the rope a dope that Ali tried with several big punchers?
Ali. His feet, reflexes and handspeed are too much for Lewis, who like every big man has trouble with athletic, moving heavyweights. He doesn't have a particularly outstanding left hook either which could have evened things up a little.
Ali would be too mobile and would move around him, waiting for moments to let his hands go and he would. Ali get in ti a good rhythm half way through the fight and cruises to a decision.
66 Ali would beat Lewis a lot easier than Lewis groupies on here will have you think. His speed and movement would make Lewis look extremely clumsy, and prime Ali definitely had enough pop to hurt Lewis, and make him wary of making mistakes. Ali by UD, if it's a 15 rounder Ali wins about 10-11 rounds. 12 rounder, Ali wins 8 or 9 rounds.
Prime Ali speed was just too much for any other hwt. Ali out boxes Lewis at distance for the decision win.
Prime Ali just too fast for Lewis. Or any heavyweight to have ever lived. Feet, hands, mind. And as we found out when he was passed his prime was a tough s.o b. Ali by UD or late stoppage.
What fight did Lewis look his best ? His destruction of Razor Ruddock was scary , the thing about Lewis was he seemed inconsistent to me . I agree Ali would have won most likely unless Lewis was " on " that day .
Lewis has always struggled with fighters with good jabs like Bruno, Vitali and Mercer. He would likely be out boxed by Ali and would be forced to be more aggressive to try and get to the fleet footed Ali. Lewis has shown in the fights were he has struggled with an opponents jab he can adapt and become an effective aggressor but Ali is a much more elusive opponent than Bruno, Mercer or Vitali. It would be close, Lewis does have a good jab himself and the height so Ali would need to be at his best and when Lewis is on the inside his sheer size will see Ali manhandled with Lewis trying to pull Ali's head down into his uppercut. But I think Ali wins a close decision, he's tough enough to survive the odd bad patch and elusive enough to minimise Lewis' usual strengths.
Lewis was a true modern 'super heavyweight.' Ali, in his prime, didn't face guys with that kind of size advantage. Still, I agree with others, his speed and movement would guide him to a UD.
Ali was a different breed, watching some of his fights recently I thought to myself you have to kill this guy to get him out of there. The Frazier fights he took some punches that would destroy most fighters for good but he just wouldn't allow it to effect him, some of those shots literally looked like they broke Ali's neck then he would come back! That kind of will is beyond most modern fighters, even Lewis. The physical advantages are there but Ali had his own advantages in ring cunning and overall speed. I'm not Ali's biggest fan personally but you cant deny what he was as a fighter, even Frazier himself said he hated Ali but admitted he was a man in the ring and a great champion, "Man, I hit him with punches that would bring down the walls of a city. Lordy, he's great".
