Roy Jones was a great middleweight and 168 pounder ... no doubt about it ... however to say he beats a prime Ezzard Charles at Charles best weight is insane. I can see him giving Moore trouble because speed was Archie's Achillies' Heel against the best but I'd still go with Archie over 15 .. let's not forget Jones chin ... Moore had extra gears Jones never dreamed about let alone had to deal with ..

Let's not forget Moore and Charles fought in one of the thickest light-heavy divisions ever, stacked with talent and tough sons of bitches...

If you were a time-traveling light-heavyweight looking for an era to go fight in, that era of the 50's might be your last choice.

In fact, you'd probably pick Jones' era. You'd either be fighting the part-time mailmen and taxi cab drivers, or fighting Jones (if you were one of the part-time mailmen or taxi cab drivers). If you were on a higher level than that, he probably wouldn't fight you anyway...

awww, dave you were doing so well and then went with the lame "he fought mailmen" route...that's just as ignorant as "jones is more muscular so he wins".

I guess that is a little exaggerated...

But which era would you rather fight in?

oh **** yeah, jones came from a **** era. no doubt.

it's just a little harsh to discount an entire career because he fought a cop (it happens a lot on the classic)

i can't possibly defend jones' resume and claim it's all time; a few months ago the ring did an article citing the best eras for each weight division. they agreed with you 100% and said the 50s was the 175 peak. the virgil hill era, was the bottom of the barrel. jones' era is not far behind...

And, for the record, that cop probably would have kicked my ass at any point of my stint in boxing training...

There were some decent enough fighters in Jones' era, just that he happened to pick on the lesser quality much of the time that gets under most people's skin, but you know that.

I appreciate the objective reply- it keeps exaggerating and biased rants in check...

I like this forum, because if you post without thinking about what you're saying first, people will hold you to the fire...

can't argue with any of the points. i'm a huge fan of jones' but you pretty much nailed him with this. he carefully matched himself in an era that was already too weak to produce an all time great, light heavy resume

and dude, i've been destroyed in the classic many times. roy featured in my first all time, top 10 list and boy did these ****ers bury me...
