Last night I watched Arguello vs Pryor II for the first time in years. Pryor was a good fighter, but he beat an aging and ring weary Arguello. Arguello had over 80 fights the first time they met. In the rematch you can see clearly that El Flaco Explosivo was never going to "EXPLODE" again. He couldn't land the left hook, the once lazer like jab was gone, his legs wouldn't do what he needed them to, et.

Agree or disagree, everbody has a right to their opinion. Argeullo was 31 chronologically, but in fighter years he was running a close second to Yori Boy Campus! When AA and Pryor met Pryor was at the absolute pinnacle of his career. I really believe that if all things were equal, a 27 year old Arguello would beat a 27 year old Pryor every time out. No doubt Pryor would have his moments, but I think things would have been the opposite of what they were: Arguello wins a barn burner first time out, and wins the rematch in 9-10 rounds.

For me, watching the fallen warrior sit on the canvass and take the 10 count, a broken man, was one of the saddest moments in boxing history.

Yeh I agree Arguello in his prime would beat Pryor the first was very close and would have been a 12 round decision for AA but he wanted 15 round it worked against him.

in his prime arguello isnt a light welterweight, so saying a prime arguello beats him makes no sense at all.

I've always been a big Arguello fan...I was pulling for him like crazy in Nov'82...I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I think that a fighter like Pryor would always present problems for Alexis Arguello with his pressure and boxing ability (as he demonstrated).
In Miami, I think both guys fought the fight of their lives. It seemed like Pryor shrugged off right hands that might have given junior middles trouble....He very determined to beat Arguello

Agreed. Prime v prime for these two fighters doesn't add up at all. Different weights, and Pryor would obviously have a big weight advantage. The question is void.

Lbflb alexis arguello is a better all around fight than pryor. My other problem with pryor is he used drugz in and out of the ring. M-MIKE

Arguello is a far better P4P fighter than Pryor. If Alexis' natural best fighting weight happened to be 140 and he came along a bit later he would have rattled Pryor's cage bigtime.

Making good sense as usual John! Some of the other posters don't seem to know what "all things being equal" means. My point really is that even in the first fight we were not watching Arguello at the pinnacle of his career, which I think came at 130. P4P, Prime for prime, Alexis is the better man 4 out of 5 times.

You made some good points. In that first fight Pryor seemed like he would rather die than loose. However, I still think that Arguello at his peak would have won the day provided of course they had both peaked in the same division.

    Boo-
Same division? Well then....definitely Arguello! His power for his weight was devastating...If he was a natural junior welter, he would have made middleweights nervous. He did carry his power with him to four divsions...Anyone else besides Pryor, that night in Miami, Arguello would have won.

Because Arguello is P4P better than Arguello doesn't mean he'd beat him H2H. I do know about "all things being equal" but its fantasy stuff, not reality. Arguello was at his best at 126/130lbs, and Pryor obviously at 140lbs. The fact of the matter is both were in their primes in different divisions. Its all "ifs and buts".

Historically, Arguello is greater than the overrated Pryor, however head-to-head is another story.

It doesn't help that Arguello peaked at a lower weight class. I don't know if Arguello ever beats Pryor head-to-head.

Arguello's entire experience at 140 was odd. He fought a couple other fights at light welter, and he disposed of those opponents with ease. The Rooney fight was one of the most amazing KO's of that era. Rooney had lost only one fight, and that to Davey Moore. Arguello ****ing ONE-PUNCHED HIM!! In the 2nd round no less. So, ya, he carried his power with him at 140. Check this out:

He seemed as dominate as ever in the "tune-ups." However,I don't think he really carried his hand speed, which was never great, or his legs.

Another oddity for Arguello at 140 has already been mentioned. I'm refering to Pryor's concession to a 15 rounder. Had the first one been 12 rounds, Arguello would have had the decision. He lost in the "championship rounds" which were normally rounds where he would own your ass, as in the Mancinni fight.

Arguello would never beat Pryor. Pryor was the better boxer and also outboxed him. What makes you think Arguello could beat him, when he could barely beat Mancini. Pryor would beat him at 135 or 140.
