What made you think of this fight? Cole was a better fighter than Williams regardless of them both holding the title. I would pick him to win a decision. Cole should have never gone to heavyweight, he probably would have done pretty well had he stayed a cruiser. I guess he went for the bucks.
Both were decent boxers, but I think Al Cole had a little more to him. I think he could take punishment better and was somewhat more skilled.
Ice Cole isn't a name thrown around too much lately. But he had a nice run as cruiser champ. That JC Gomez title run was even better. Nevertheless, all these guys are a distant second to Commander Vander at the weight. Cole outboxes Williams for the decision win in this one.
I have been hearing about Williams' next fight and for some reason I got him confused with Al Cole, and the more I thought about it, the more I felt it necessary to provide a thread discussing these two battling it out.
I picked Cole by decision but Williams was more fun to watch. When Williams was at his best he was very good. He had some good wins and close losses to good fighters (even though he was past prime for a few of them)- W10 Dwight Qawi (a past prime Qawi, '92) W10 Jeff Lampkin (Lampkin past prime) LSD12 Orlin Norris (LKOby3 in the rematch, both fights for the WBA CW title) LSD10 Byrd (first time Byrd was down as a pro) W12 Adolpho Washington KO9 Imamu Mayfield (wins IBF CW title) LSD12 Kelvin Davis He even had his moments vs. Jirov (LKOby7, lost the IBF title) and O'Neil Bell x2 (LKOby11 and LKOby9).
Overall Cole had the better title run. it seems like Williams prime didnt last long and he was past it when he lost to Jirov. But the Williams who was robbed against Norris (1st fight) would have beat Cole imo. Cole had a good chin especailly at cruiser much better than Williams, but i like a prime Williams to win a decision. Although a faded Cole was better than a faded Williams if they fought when both were past id go with Cole. Once Williams faded he went down hill fast, but i thought he was a pretty good fighter against Norris the first time around. I Saw Williams fight one time in person in Las Vegas and got to meet him after (he scored a 1st round ko) hell of a nice guy and he liked when i told them that he got robbed against Norris. I also met Mayweather(Roger that day who also fought),and Mike Mccallum(in the crowd).
Not much since Williams was a pretty decent fighter moving forward. Cole had good reach but didn't use lateral movement. I think Williams would pressure him and take a decision or possibly stop Cole late. In the battle of these B fighters, Williams was slightly better, imo.
