I was watching some Bert Cooper fights the other day and realized how underrated he was. If drugs/lack of focus and proper training were not an issue for Bert Cooper, how does he do in his prime vs the James Toney of the Samuel Peter fights? I think Toney from the Holyfield fight outpoints him fairly easy, but I'm thinking it would be a pretty competitive and exciting fight with the later version of Toney. Thoughts? :think

Bert Cooper could knock out anyone who ever fought ... AND he could lose to just about everyone and their mom, too.

I could easily see Cooper wiping out James Toney ... I can picture him getting hit a few times and just deciding he'd rather be doing something else that night ... and I could see both of those situations happening in the same fight.

Cooper was a mess. All the talent in the world and a total mess.

First off, cooper is not bothering to get himself at 100% pre-fight for a former middleweight. Never happen. these are the guys Bert doesn't prepare for the way he should and goes in thinking he has an easy night's work.

Toney will prepare and outsmart the guy for 8 of the 10 or 12 rounds it goes. He wins a decision going away and solves Cooper early and avoids the big shots. And he counters Cooper just like lots of guys did against that cross arm defense of Bert's. And he drops those hands with that defense, which is all wrong against this opponent.

Cooper on a good night was a real handful so say Toney at this stage in his career did catch him on a good night I could see Cooper making a real good fight of it but no matter what I always see the outcome in Toney's favor. Cooper is the kinda guy Toney loved to fight, come forward type guys Toney often chewed up. I think Toney at this time in his career would win a competitive decision against Cooper on his best day and would probably stop Cooper or completely dominate him on a normal showing for Cooper. Samuel Peter I feel was more of a force then Cooper at heavyweight and I felt Toney beat him in there first meeting. Toney still had some stuff at this time in his career.

Toney was a kook, often fat and blubbery, and very poor spoken, but crafty as hell in the ring, and had a chin of steel, he took Peters shots something Klitchko didn't do in 2005, and most thought he beat Peter in the 1st fight.

Cooper was a druggie, inconsistent, and often lacked heart, he quit after only 1 round against Foreman on the old Tuesday night fights..

Toney wins this without much problem, they are just too far apart on talent, James the superior..

Nobody is stopping James Toney. Maybe real animals like Louis, Dempsey, or Tyson might.

At any rate, Toney at this stage was still good enough to take Rahman and Peter to close fights, so he should be able to beat PRIME Cooper.

Could we be seeing the return of Sir Bert Cooper though?

Bert Cooper was pretty darn good depending on which Bert Cooper showed up. No matter what he never seemed to do well with big heavyweights I feel he showed up in good forum against Bowe and still got blasted out in two. The thing with Cooper though he more often then not showed up less then prepared. I think Cooper in shape on a good night could give Toney a good fight. Toney was small as a heavyweight and wouldn't mind to stay inside with Cooper which is an ideal opponent for Cooper to have a good performance against. But likewise Toney loved guys who'd come forward to him. Non the less I don't think Cooper would come out with the W infact I think Toney would light him up pretty good with good clean punches, Cooper's activity would keep the fight interesting but I see a clear win for Toney. How clear the win is for Toney would depend on what shape he shows up in. I'd like to see Cooper motivated as a cruiserweight take on Toney as a cruiser I think the result would be the same but it would make for a very exciting fight.

The question posed stated "Prime Bert Cooper", meaning Cooper at his very best. Cooper at his very best was an extremely good and dangerous heavyweight. I think Cooper beats Toney.

I think even a fat Toney would win.

:good Agreed. A lot of people seem to underestimate how good prime Cooper could be on a given night.

I think Toney outboxes him to a UD. That being said Bert has a puncher's chance early in the fight as Toney became more hittable as a heavyweight.
