Prime Bruce Seldon: a powerful puncher or not?

Seldon is what I would call a sharp hitter with a lot of speed. He did not have big time power, but he did have enough to put most people away through an attrition of blows, unless his chin or mental fortitude caved in first.

In fact Seldon did badly stun and rock Oliver McCall to the point where a knockdown looked probable. I recommend watching Seldon vs McCall and pay attention to round nine.

Seldon was ahead on all 3 cards vs mccall. Oliver needed a knockout to win. Seldon also destroyed Joe Hipp, who broke Morrisons glass jaw

 

Seldon vs Hipp was a mis-match. Hipp was to slow, and could not get past Seldon's jab. After 5 rounds, Hipps eyes were closed as he lost via TKO.

This thread has me thinking about Seldon. Seldon was a below average world alphabet title holder, yet if he was in his prime today, he might be the best USA heavyweight out there.

 

I hope thats a joke. he is nowhere near as good as Chris Arreola and Eddie Chambers. WATCH OUT vitali, Old and slow reflexes Vitali better watch out. Arreolo not only has serious power, but serious skills too. If he ever gets himself in better shape he will be tough to beat. Chambers has fast fast hands and good boxing skills, another one that needs to get his weight down. But if vitali manages to beat him while chambers is in shape, this would be a good win for him. Vitali is old and slow, he is mediocre skill wise and is limited in the heart/toughness category. Speed skills Age. Wlad is a different story. Wlad would smoke them. Wlad would also smoke vitali too.

 

honestly Mendoza, I don't know if I see him beating someone like Eddie Chambers or even Tony Thompson. About the only thing that ever really impressed me about Bruce was his hercules like physique. His boxing skills were okay, but hardly stellar. He was easily floored, had poor stamina, shaky chin, and sometimes even lacked heart when he needed to show it most. As for punching power, I rate him as more of a cummulative knockout hitter as opposed to a guy who had true one-punch ability.

I saw him get decked early against Ribalta on the same card as Mercer vs Damiani and Morrison vs Tillis. Saw him gas against McCall a few months later then bust into tears upon losing. Then, I saw him get iced in a single round by Riddick Bowe, and get dropped and outboxed by a comeback Tubbs sometime later..

Seldon was trained by the same people who handled Carl The truth Williams, and even sparred under Truth's tutilage for a while. He started off looking like a promising young prospect, but by 1992 most people knew his potential had been over sold to the public.

 

Many people must've thought Seldon was another Tyson until he lost to McCall.

Not for those of us who saw him early on. Unless memory is failing me, the first fight I ever saw Seldon in was when he was around 10-0 taking on a journeyman named Jerry Jones. I was an avid viewer of ESPN top rank boxing in those days, which was the venue that Bruce fought most often on during his prospect days. Right away, I saw that he had finishing problems and lacked in the skill and instinct to be able to a man away when he was in trouble. In my opinion, A debuting Tyson in 1985 would have destroyed a 15-0 Seldon from 1990..

 

you have a valid point .. seldon always seemed like he lacked that killer that he would have needed to be for his talents to really blossom

 

Good as opposed to great or mediocre.

 

Seldon was actually not a bad fighter. He wasnt the tallest heavyweight, but he had good power and an excellent jab. He was just mentally very weak, and had a poor chin. He was the beneficiary of being strategically placed into the rankings and the Mike Tyson sweepstakes by Don King. He barely held onto his title to face Tyson before pulling one of the worst dives in boxing history.
