I once had an article in which Trevor Berbick was interviewed about how Tyson had being performing in sparring for the Buster fight. He basically said every sparring parter was kicking his ass even before he left for Tokyo & close to the fight in Tokyo, including McCall, Page & Trevor himself. I'm determined to find that interview again one day, it was a great piece of info.
Sparing does not mean much lots of times boxers are just working on timing certain punches. And not actually trying to win the sparing session. Maybe it would not be a knock out, I may be wrong about that but 23 picked a knock out for Lewis. Thanks for the debate, I don't have much else to say to exsplain why I think Douglas would win. Have a good weekend.
Nonsense, Douglas' victory over Tyson had more to do with the other guy rather than Douglas himself. Douglas was an underachiever who had failed at world level on numerous occasions prior to him defeating Tyson, he was a known quitter who had been knocked out by several journeymen fighters who weren't in the same league as a Lewis. He has the motion and style to trouble Lewis for a round or two but as soon as Lewis opens up he stops him, simples...and i'm a Rid**** Bowe fan.
Lewis would come on strong quickly and get to Buster before the late rounds IMO this fight ends before the 2-3rd rd
I'm not a Lewis fan in fact i found his demeanour extremely irritating but he knocks out Douglas, fairly early i believe. Buster was a competent boxer and may cause Lewis some problems in the early running but lacked both durability and desire at the highest level and rarely if ever did he fight with consistency. His victory over Tyson was excellent but had more to do with the other guy preparing for a routine defence, much like Lewis did versus Rahman. Lewis KO 4 Douglas.:good
Yeah, even though Douglas could on occasion show up and put on a good show, you can't favor a man over an ATG based on one or two good evenings out of an entire career. I think Lewis takes this emphatically about 9 times out of 10. Also, Douglas's win over Tyson has to be taken into consideration. While it would certainly appear on the surface that Mike Tyson at 37-0 and at only 23 years old was prime, there's a bit more to it than that. He had basically gone from being the most active man in the division to only seeing two fights within a 20 month period, neither of which lasting very long.. His entire original team including manager, promoter, trainers, and corner men had been stripped down and replaced.. He went from having a hard time finding sparring partners to getting decked by the faded Greg Page in the gym. He had been through an ugly divorce that almost landed him in prison, a street fight with Mitch Green, and a car accident that resulted in injury. On the night of the fight you had corner personal that inbetween rounds seemed to offer little useful advice and were attempting control his swelling with a melted bag of water.. I've gone through this a thousand times over the past 26 years and I still can't come around to thinking that this was an ideal situation for the champ..
Trevor Berbick though. Mad as a box of frogs. He lost to Tyson because Don King pumped poison gas into his hotel room. The guy was a paranoid schizophrenia, at the very least. He accused Larry Holmes of all sorts of weird stuff, so Holmes was forced to run across a limousine and perform a flying dropkick upon Mr.Berbick's person. His memories and recollections of any training camp have to be taken with a pinch of salt surely.
Berbick wasn't the only sparring partner claiming this, though. Page and McCall all have their own accounts to what transpired, which is basically the same as Berbick's claim.
From late 1987 to late 1990 (in between his loss to Tucker and his loss to Holyfield) Douglas went 7-0 (5) vs. the likes of Wimpy Halstead KO9, Mike Williams KO7, Trevor Berbick W10, Oliver McCall W10, Mike Tyson KO10, and others. He beat Tyson for the Lineal HW World Title in the biggest upset in boxing history (42-1 underdog). Prior to this stretch he had been stopped 3 times, his record was 23-4-1-1 (17) overall and 0-1 in World Title fights. He did have wins over Tex Cobb, Greg Page, and others.
