prime buster douglas vs prime liston, lyle and shavers

wins for lyle and liston but shavers loses to douglas.

 

Douglas was a good solid fighter who just couldnt put it together mentally. Its hard to tell how he would have done. He basically took apart what was considered one of the top fighters ever, even though Tyson wasnt at his best. I dont know if anyone without a good jab movement, power, and a lot of desire could have beaten that version of Tyson, but Douglas showed what he could do when he put it all together. I would give him a good shot against all those guys you listed.
Cant really say prime Douglas, because in his prime he was so inconsistent, just giving up in fights he was ahead in. At his best, he was very good, but overall he was missing that mental toughness that was so important to boxing.

 

Hard to say really, but I'd be fairly confident that Douglas would KO Shavers in the mid rounds. Tyson was a much better and sharper puncher than Earnie and he couldn't get Douglas out of there, I don't see Shavers doing so either.

I see Douglas-Lyle being close, but Douglas has the superior speed and him at his absolute best would be able to beat Lyle to the punch more often than not and win via UD.

Douglas would give Liston fits. His movement, combined with the fact that he had the faster jab (and in terms of power wasn't far behind Liston) would give Liston problems. Against Tyson he showed the heart of a champion, as well as a solid chin. But ultimately Liston would hurt Douglas, and unlike against an unmotivated Tyson where the bell saved him and Tyson couldn't capitalize, Liston would take him out. Listons an under rated finisher and would knock Douglas out anywhere after 6 rounds, but in a close fight.

 

Prime liston gets to buster late, anywhere from 8th to 12th round, after having some problems early.Lyle and Shavers would probably lose close decisions to Douglass, though I could see Lyle possibly getting Douglass out of there in the middle rounds if he caught him.

 

Liston k.o.s Douglas. Douglas over Lyle and Shavers as long as were talking about Buster at his best, which was a total of one fight.

 

agreed, but wasnt douglas fairly consistant after the tucker fight though? It was a 6 fight streak against fighters with winning records in competative fights. The last three were rated. mike williams was 16-1, had knocked out tillis and taken a fit looking spoon to a SD yet douglas KO'd him then he got good rounds in against mccall and berbick who he dominated. Add that to his wins over cobb and page and douglas looks like a tough night for anyone.

I would expect douglas of that 7 fight 1987-90 win streak to beat lyle and shavers. no problem.

Prime liston would be a problem for douglas but then would blow out wins over the smaller roy harris, folley and patterson be any prep for a big fired up long armed box-fighter?

Liston put in 12 good rounds against machen so in his prime he has the engine to cope and he also chopped down the over rated big cat wiliams so he could beat taller fighters too. However, even williams had his moments with Liston.

gotta side with prime Liston but a fired up douglas has a chance.

liston stops him,lyle is a close fight and shavers is a 50/50 ,douglas is better than shavers but he was hot and cold the question is if shavers lands a bomb or not,if he does then good night. all the reputation of douglas is based on a fight against a horrible version of tyson and still he had to get up to win

 

Very true. I concur its possible that Douglas COULD beat Shavers. But if Earnie lands a bomb like the one he dropped Holmes with back in '79, then I'm not so sure Buster is getting up.

 

Shavers is the one most likely to lose to Douglas out of all those names . Douglas can also be wiped out in a single rnd by Shavers .

50/50 fight .

Due to Douglas being a hot N cold fighter and Shavers being chinny and having stamina problems .

Lyle 7/10 would give Douglas a beatdown . The man had the willpower and determination to give Douglas an L .

Lyle on points or TKO .

Liston would be his worst nightmare .

I find it hard to believe anyone would think Douglas had a prime unless one fight is classed as a prime now . Douglas apart from the Tyson fight was a solid fighter with a spotty mental toughness . Liston ko's him and as said the other fights are 50-50 at best
