http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365000 It's all here in this fantastic thread by general zod. He was obviously a world class fighter, his performances in the olympics were outstanding! His talent was unbelievable. The problem with Roy was he didn't challenge himself nearly enough throughout his career, he took too many easy fights in his prime. The first time Roy was randomly tested he was caught with anabolic steroids in his system, and this can't be overlooked when judging his career and performances. I think a lot of it is due to the fact that many of them would have come from poor families, and had difficult upbringings. All of a sudden they have millions in the bank, and no idea how to protect or invest this money.
Gray, I agree regarding Roy and Holy. Carl definitely needs to change his guard. It's because he's such a huge fan of Roy's, he tries to fight the same. It's the same with David Haye. The left arm is left swinging low. But Roy could get away with it due to his ridiculous reflexes. Haye and Carl get tagged far too easily. James De Gale is the same when he switches to orthadox. Fundamentally Roy didn't have great technique, but as everyone knows, he'd got the lightening handspeed and footwork to avoid getting hit. Anybody that bases their fighting style on Roy Jones, is going to get into trouble.
Get Aids Calslappy, was not half of what RJJ was, a prime RJJ would have raped the **** out of a prime Calslappy with one hand., you don't know **** about boxing, you are a ****** **** sucking troll, you need to fist your *******.
U mad RJJ's resume is a joke "prime" RJJ was smacking around guys that would not be qualified to be sparring partners much less title challengers
Jones AND Calzaghe have greater H2H ability than resumes, by some margin. As for handspeed, Calzaghe could punch harder because he wasn't loading up, Jones did put pop on his punches thus they may have been a fraction slower. Calzaghe was only quicker however, when he poured his offence down the middle, ala Lacy. When he punched wide, sloppy technique cost him speed and accuracy. Also worthy of note, is the difference in body types, Jones was heavily muscled which should of restricted his speed. (The man was an insane athlete, so I doubt it did, though if that old addage is true then it's a scary thought) Calzaghe was more of a long and loose body type, which allows for greater punching fluidity.
Disagree. Roids build body mass, to the best of my knowlege they don't influence speed which is by and large, a natrual gift. The muscle and speed was always there, from the Seoul Olympics, to MW to the Ruiz fight.
if you watch all Cals earlier fights as I am working through now he looks very sharp, although its hard to tell exactly how sharp because unfortunately he most often fighting 2nd grade fighters who are slow anyway (all the way up to Lacy in 06/07, with only a couple of exceptions). The 2nd problem in watching the fights is that his hometown ref keeps jumping in half way through a fight to stop it and mysteriously award Cal a TKO as soon as Cal gets slappy. As soon as the fight is stopped the opponent is fine, hes may as well be down the beach. Largely nOt really KOs at all, but hometown TKOS against opponents who were happy to pick up the cheque. This is a mile off what Roy did. He looked just as sharp, but when he hit he hurt, and actually floored his opponents a lot more, so with floored opponets he never had a need for a hometown ref to stop the fight - he was actually winning. Real KOs, real speed.
