Significantly better than Carnera did against Max Baer.

Max Baer was the outstanding challenger when he fought Carnera, and he was there to win the title.

Witherspoon had long since given up ambitions of world glory when he fought Bruno, and he was there to lose, and only won because the opportunity was thrown his way!

Witherspoon was the Champ, who got the job-done.
Carnera was the Champ, who took one of the worst pastings in heavyweight history.

    Carnera was the lineal champion.

Witherspoon was just a paper champion, who was lucky to be that at the time!

Witherspoon was worthy to lace up Carnera's boxing gloves, but probably not based on what he was doing at this point in time!

I think the one is close. I'd favor Bruno as the poll does but leave plenty of room for an upset.

Yes, Burno was the better boxer and hit harder, but you have to see Carrera's heart vs. Max Baer, who hit harder and was in good form that night to understand how hard he could be to put away.

Bruno had some stamina and fear issues.

Prior to the Baer fight, ( Carnera's 85th fight ) he had never been stopped. Baer floored Carrera 7-12 times, depending not the source. Give Carrera his due, the man had a heart even bigger than he was.

After the fight with Baer, Carnera was never the same. It is likely he suffered a bad concussion and could not take the pounding anymore. So to me, his prime ended on this night. Carrera was terrible vs. Joe Louis

You can call Witherspoon what you like. He was a World Champion coming into the Bruno fight and looked like a guy trying to win, to me, as the scores and the end result bear out.

Spoon was leagues ahead of Carnera, in terms of natural talent. Even on a bad night, he would have mopped the floor with Carnera, who regularly went the distance with sub-200lb opponents; some of whom were able to place Carnera on the deck.

Bruno has the better jab and hits about ten times harder Carnera has no chance in this fight unless Frank is threatened with a gun , has pepper rubbed in his eyes,or Terry Lawless throws in the towel for no reason, all things that happened in Carnera fights.

    Tubbs
    Broad
    Page
    Smith
    Tillis

    You are embarrassing yourself!

There was no such thing as an alphabet title in Carnera's day.

Therefore we have to consider Witherspoon to be the equivalent of a contender in Carnera's universe, not a champion.
I prefer to go on what happened in the real world, not what you think might happen in a fantasy fight.

Carnera accomplished more than Witherspoon, and the version of Witherspoon that Bruno lost to, was by no means the best version of Witherspoon.

We certainly can’t assign this version of Witherspoon a win over Carnera, without even lacing up the boxing gloves.
All in all this fight is just another reason to think that Bruno would probably lose to Carnera.

Witherspoon was out of shape and disinterested.

The seeds of his defeat to Smith a few months later were already sewn.

He was a very good fighter, but this was not a very good version of him.
