By your standards then, any Boxer, who is/was not undisputed - which, in modern times, generally refers to a given Boxer holding all three of the WBA, WBC and IBF belts - is not a Champion. Following this logic, Carnera is superior to Larry Holmes. Patent bollox! I am not even 100% sure you are aware that you're in a real debate, right now. That's exactly what the thread is asking for. Apart from the other clear flaws in your line of argument, I think mcvey has already seeded a case for why your statements above can be seen as, at best, utterly wrong. Yes we can. We already have evidence from Witherspoon himself, which lays waste to your claims of his disinterest and him being out of shape. "looks can be deceiving. I was in shape" “The Bruno fight was a special time for me, my best win” Clearly not, if you stop trying to ignore evidence in plain sight.
If you were acquainted with the real world you would not pick Carnera over Bruno or Witherspoon! Carnera lost his title as soon as he faced a live contender.Bruno gave Lewis life and death for 7rounds . Carnera would not be competitive with Lewis.I doubt he would be competitive with Michael Grant!
But surely that smacks of arrogance in that you are attempting to determine how somebody else, with opposing views, should view something and form their opinion. "I" , and i am quite certain " others " can very much can assign this version of Witherspoon a win over Carnera, as 68% of the voting proves.
I love this expression," world class opposition "he beat about 4 rated fighters and there is a question mark over one of them in the minds of quite a few fans. How does Carnera beat Bruno, does he out jab him? Does he out punch him? Explain to us how! Who did Carnera beat that Bruno would not?
If I'm honest I see a Lewis - Carnera going very similar to Lewis ruddock fight, with Lewis blasting Carnera out in 2. Lewis s right hand doing for primo.
Not at all. I consider Sam Langford to be a much greater fighter than Primo Carnera, despite the fact that the later held the lineal title. We have to compare like for like when comparing eras though. In Carnera's era a champion meant a lineal champion, therefore Witherspoon was not the equivalent of a champion in Carnera's era. A better comparison would be a highly ranked contender such as King Levinsky. The thread is asking us to predict the outcome of a fight between Carnera and Bruno. You are introducing an additional assumption that a certain version of Witherspoon would beat Carnera, which might or might not be true. Your answer to the initial question should involve as few assumptions as possible. What the film shows us is an overweight Witherspoon fighting lethargically, and what history shows us is that he would go on to a crushing defeat only a few months later. Based on this, I can’t help but be a little sceptical of what Witherspoon is saying. Also the fact that you are hanging the case for Bruno on a fight that he lost, doesn’t bode particularly well for him here.
Yes Lewis would put Carnera away pretty convincingly. It would probably take longer than two, but Lewis would be all wrong for him.
