i believe that whitaker would have a much greater chance of beating JCC over 112 rounds than 15 roundss. 15 rounds is chavez's territory

he may not have enought time over 12 rounds to beat whitaker. but saying that, the judges were never too pleased with Pea's over use of defence and constant show boating

JCC did have a lot of success in early rounds of there fight in 1993. he was making pea miss and getting in plenty of nice punches of his own

I personally think that Chavez was at his best at 135 lbs. At 140 I'd have to go with Whitaker by decision. Whitaker was tremendously crafty. I think he'd figure out how to survive 3 more rounds if things got dicey for him.

I think Whitaker would always beat Chavez anywhere from 135 on.

It's not a great matchup for Chavez. I just think at 135, in his prime, say the '86-88 timeframe, he'd have a much better chance of pulling it out. It's tough to see Chavez getting a decision and it's difficult to see Pea getting stopped, so it's truly one of the all-time toughest matchups for Chavez.

Both Whitaker and Chavez were probably best @ 135.

I had their fight at 145 in favor of Whitaker 8-4. While that's not THAT wide in terms of rounds, Whitaker's rounds were much more clear than Chavez's. Chavez's rounds were closer, Whitaker won rounds by clearer margins, making Chavez look silly at times and hurting him in round 8.

At 135 or 140, I still see Whitaker's skills and style giving Chavez a lot of problems, but I see the rounds being closer. The type of fight where there are a lot of different opinions on who won and by how much, and it mainly depends on the style you prefer.

the judges normally go with the box office attraction and crowd favourites in times like that

    Or, simply, against Whitaker.

He did get the benefit of the doubt against Rivera...but I had him beating Chavez and Ramirez 8-4 in those controversies. And against DLH, I had it even. DLH winning is one thing, but 9-3 on two cards?

whats tough about seeing JCC getting a points verdict. he got the draw when he didnt deserve it in 93. if the rounds are close like the dlh-Pea fight in 1997, i would bet a lot of money on JCC getting it

Chavez chances of winning would be better at 135, but not by much considering Pea was at his best at the weight too. Prime for prime at any weight I go with Whitaker, I don't see Chavez beating Whitaker ever, but he's got solid chances at 135 or 140 if both were in their primes. Maybe he gets the decision because there's a history of bad calls against Whitaker, but as far as who actually won and deserved it, I say Whitaker beats him every time if both are properly prepared, 12 or 15 rounds, I don't think it matters.

Well, i think Whitaker always beats him. His style and southpaw stance just aren´t right for Chavez.

I think the fight at lightweight suits Whitaker even better against Chavez. He relied on his speed and reflexes a lot at at lightweight. When firing on all cylinders at that weight Whitaker was a demon. Chavez was never known for great handspeed, although when inside and putting punches together his speed is definetley underrated. Another factor, Whitaker's movement was effected a lot when he moved up in weight to 147lbs. He became less mobile. Chavez never relied on movement with his legs, head, upperbody like Whitaker did in his prime. While the fight at 135lbs would favour Chavez in terms of closing the distance quicker and cutting off the ring, it favours Whitaker even more IMO.

There is a lot of support on this board for Pea and a shortage of recognition for Chavez. if a slowed down chavez of 1993 could land on Pea on regular basis like he did, the man of 1984-1990 could do much better.

I am still divided on who would win at each weight but its far from a foregone like some of the people on this board would have you believe
