I think this is a much closer fight than most people seem to.I would make Curry the favorite but I could see Mayweather outboxing & outpointing him via his jabs to the body, precise counters, lateral movement, and safety-first defensive approach. Very intriguing matchup that might end up boring the masses.
At welterweight curry should win excellent boxer like Floyd but with more power and excellent speed.Curry was for a short period the PFP best .Not many a welterweight in history beat that version of curry and don't think Money is one of them.
Maybe I'm underrating Curry a bit but I fancy Mayweather to take it to points and nick a close decision.
Im going to go with Floyd by a split decision, but controversial .Curry would have seen to have done enough and Floyd s defensive strategy would been seen as to negative. The crowd and Curry's team would be expecting to hear Don had bagged the win but Floyd s the one celebrating .
I don't think I'd pick many if any pure boxer or counterpuncher types, Floyd included, to beat Curry at his peak, his style was perfectly suited to dealing with that kind of fighter. Quick closing footwork and hard, fast, accurate punches thrown with great timing and in combination in tandem with very sound defensive skill and inside fighting ability. Bad match up for Mayweather, he can't outbox Don imo. Didn't have the legs by that point, at least matched for overall skill and didn't have the power to truly hurt him, nor was he the type at that point in his career to really cut loose and fight with abandon, which was how Curry needed to be tackled. I see the tougher, more vicious boxer punchers, skilled pressure fighters and unorthodox types being Don's kryptonite than the pure technicians.
That is pretty much my opinion too, TR. Curry has a size advantage, a hand speed advantage and a stylistic advantage over Floyd due to his excellent jab and movement in and out. Currys weaknesses were his overall toughness and durability at the very highest level. Things Floyd would not test with his fighting style. Floyd also actually has no experience whatsoever at fighting someone like a prime Don Curry unlike Curry who had two fights with a prime Marlon Starling, a fighter who while not as fast and slick as Floyd is pretty similar in modus operandi. Judging on his career Floyd wouldnt have dreamed of risking his zero against the prime Donald Curry who destroyed McCrory anyway . The Curry who fought Norris would have been more to Floyd's liking. Cheers All.
McCallum for Curry is my pick... and Floyd hard to say as he fought great guys when they were passed it .. who are your picks??
Curry by clear decision. Pretty hard to beat a prime Curry with a safety first style like Floyd's. I think Curry's offense would put Floyd in a defensive shell for the most part. P4P, obviously Floyd is the better/greater fighter, but Curry was a better welterweight.
I would rate Marquez as the best technician Floyd fought ( despite being chubby ) with Cotto in second place. In my opinion McCallum and Starling would be the two most skilled fighters Curry faced. I would put money on both prime McCallum and Starling being too good for Cotto and Marquez at 147 - 160 ( obviously McCallum who is too big for Marquez and Cotto ). Prime Starling vs Cotto is a " pick em " fight but I reckon Moochie would win a close decision. He had better stamina than Cotto. Cheers.
