Would kill for heavy bag footage. We've seen what Tyson and Foreman can do to a bag but nothing on Shavers?
If I am not mistaken this footage was taken at the Playboy club in Vernon NJ (northwestern NJ). This is where I saw Foreman train a few years later as well as where I met Duran prior to his bout with Hagler. When I met Duran however he was in party mode late at night at one of the clubs bars.
it just would show that his power overall in every single blow of his arsenal is overrated like hell. also look at his slim legs, usually a big puncher generates his power shots from his legs. ali insinuated several times that tyson did hit harder than shavers and it was not close.(yes i know that he never fought tyson ) but a guy with the experience of ali could rate a puncher only watching his blows closely
Everyone who fought Shavers testified about his power. Ali's comments concerning Shavers power is testament in of itself. The guy was brutal.
Touching story then you realize Shavers hit a out of shape Ali flush and couldn't put him down and Frazier actually did put Ali down. So Ali's opinion on his power meant nothing. Ken Norton stated he didn't know who hit him harder between Foreman and Shavers. Other people would change their story depending on who they were talking about. Here is a good example of this This content is protected http://basementgymboxing.blogspot.com/2014/08/quotes-about-power-leroy-caldwell-on.html The fight of course is Leroy Caldwell who in the second link stated back in 1983 that Foreman, Shavers, Bruno, and Cleveland Williams power were the same. Yet in the first link that took place in 2014/2015 he stated Shavers punched way harder than anybody he ever faced. Does that make any sense? People say all kinds of stupid stuff. You can't take everything people say as the truth.
If this is from June of 1973, I believe the boxer sparring with Shavers was Jeff Merritt. Shaver's was training to fight Jerry Quarry, Merritt broke Shaver's jaw with a left hook and the fight with Quarry was postponed til December of 1973. The boxer in this video is tall and lanky just like Merritt who was 6'5.
Pure crap. Ali who felt the power of Foreman, Frazier, Lyle, Liston and Shavers felt SHAVERS hit him hardest. This is the deciding vote. Frazier, although a good left hooker, never had the level of power of either Foreman or Shavers. Many call Shavers the hardest puncher they ever faced. Not many say the same thing about Frazier. Joe knocked Ali down after beating on him and hurting him for 14 prior rounds. That knockdown in round 15 was due to a perfectly timed hook rather than its power.
Shavers hit hard. Too hard. The hardest punchers do. But who hit harder is like asking how long is a piece of string. Who hit harder from the guys who already hit too hard? "Too hard" is already plenty if half of it is enough to knock a guy cold. So the hardness itself is only part of it. What counts is who they can hit. Can they hit the best guys with their best punch? Or do they simply have a punch that connects solidly only among the lesser guys. Shavers iced very decent guys like Ellis and Norton. He nearly killed Larry Holmes, So he really was a top puncher.
